First there was Apple, Amazon and Zulily. Then, Tesla called Reno home. High tech security company Ghost Systems moved their main headquarters into the Reno area. Both high tech and manufacturing companies have seen what our Reno community has to offer and are moving operations here. The latest announcement of a move to our area came just a few days ago. Plans are currently in the works for recreational gear company Cascade Designs to set up shop in Reno.
Cascade Designs manufactures almost 1,000 different outdoor products through eight different brand names: MSR, Therm-A-Rest, Seal Line, Platypus, ECase, PackTowl, Hummingbird and Tracks. Chances are, if you have gone camping, hiking, kayaking, boating or just about any other outdoor activity in the last few years, you have probably used one of Cascade Designs' products. This Seattle-based, family-owned company was looking for a place they could cater to their large California market while getting the most bang for their buck. That is how they ended up coming to Reno. Washington and Utah were also in the running.
It is expected that Cascade Designs' move into our Reno community may not be complete until the beginning of 2016. What exactly will be manufactured out of their Reno facility has not been officially determined yet. Their decision to set up shop in Reno was not based on taxpayer incentives, either. None were offered to them. Instead, the recreational activities available in the Reno area was one of the reasons the company found it so appealing.
Even without tax incentives, Reno continues to draw in companies from around the country. Whether it be our low cost of doing business in comparison to larger cities like Seattle, Los Angeles or Chicago or our fantastic natural surroundings, Reno is proving to be a hot commodity for many different types of companies and organizations. Cascade Designs is only the most recent company to set up shop in Reno. I'm excited to see who might be next!
