I've seen this once before

I don't know a whole lo about plants and landscaping but I think I've seen this before. This cactus plant is growing a large stem that lengthens noticeably every day. I remember years ago, in another part of California, seeing this. The stem blossomed and then the entire plant died. Not sure if this will be the case at my neighbors house, but I will know soon enough.

We have a lot of those here in the desert.  It reminds me of the Century Plant. It does die off after the bloom, but babies will soon sprout up after you remove all the dead sections.  A re-birth!

Tom - I would agree with Jan, it is probably some sort of Century Plant, and we do have a lot of them here in the desert.

That's an Agave cactus, called a Century Plant, from which they make rope.  That tall section does not have the fibers, only the pointed stem leaves.  That long protrusion will get 15', and it flowers.

They are real popular in South America and the rope is very strong.

Cacti are wonderful and unusual plants.  No doubt a local will know what to expect from this one.

I can think of only one thing that would result from that spire, a blossom.

Home is where the hearth is.

That's very cool.  I've seen that before, but I never realized the plant would die afterward.
