Every 29 seconds a student drops out of our public schools system.
Before the end of this year more then a million children will drop out,
by doing so passing on their best chances for success in adulthood.
Strengthening the schools is critical, when one in three young adults
drops out every year its not just about improving the education. We
have to create an integrated approach that will involve the family, the
school and the community.
Our Schools Report Card
Math and reading scores of Los Angeles Unified's fourth- and
eighth-graders showed no improvement over last year and continue to lag
behind both state and national averages.
In reading, performance of students in fourth and eighth
grades in
the Los Angeles Unified School District was the worst among 11 of the
nation's largest urban school districts, according to the report card
by the National Assessment of Education Progress.
In math, fourth-graders ranked eighth among peers in districts
including Boston, Houston and New York, while eighth-graders fared
better than peers in just two districts: the District of Columbia and
Atlanta.
Valley Schools
Despite all of these problems, more than a dozen San Fernando Valley schools
were honored last Wednesday for exemplary academic performance.
A good reason to move to the Woodland Hills California area is
that 2 of the grade schools honored Wednesday are here, they
are Welby Way Elemantry and Woodland Hills Elementary,. There are a
couple of middle schools and high schools that ranked the
best in the nation.
