A Night At The Opera

One of the fun things about having a friend in the National Opera's Orchestra is a chance to see free operas from time to time.   Tonight it was Rossini's La Cenerentola - Cinderella meets Italian Opera.

In this version, there are two evil stepsisters and a buffoon of a stepfather trying to reach Easy Street by marrying one of his daughter's off to the prince. If you are a little intimidated by opera, this is a wonderful introduction to this amazing art form.

And the audience was full of fun people.  I met one of the company's voice teachers - she is about to have knee replacement surgery and we swapped phone numbers.  I also got to meet one of the costume designers as well as Cinderella's understudy.

Of course, they would have thrown me out if I'd tried to get a photo of the production, so the bust of JFK will have to do!

Interesting post - I have never thought much about opera before, but this really does sound like something worth a try.

Bob, it occurred to me that this would be a fun opera to see with a 5-year old kid.  Even though it's in Italian, it's easy to follow.  The sub-titles help!  OK, so maybe a little older than 5 so the kid knows how to read the sub titles.

William, being a musician, I've been to my share and played in many pit orchestras.  If you're going to fulfill your bucket list, I'd pick a classic production.  A lot of the older productions are being set in New York City tenements with minimal scenery.  But the costumes and scenery of the older versions are what I think makes opera so enjoyable.

Cinderella's understudy.

That's an interesting idea to consider, if I simply think of it outside of theatre, and simply as an idea.

The Kennedy is a great resource to have; good to know you were able to take advantage of it.

My daughter is a classical vocal performer--opera. She just graduated college and will be working for Central City Opera this summer. Unbelievably, Tom White and I have never attended the opera.
