Smith Mountain Lake is a beautiful, 20,600 acre lake located about an hour west of Lynchburg. The lake was created in the 1960's to generate electricity.  There are 500 miles of shoreline spanning Bedford, Franklin and Pittsylvania Counties with gorgeous mountain views all around.

Smith Mountain Lake, Bedford County, Virginia

Boating season is almost here and every season there are accidents. Safety should be a top concern, so please follow the rules and make sure you have the REQUIRED EQUIPMENT on board. Each vessel must be equipped with enough US Coast Guard approved life jackets or personal flotation devices for each person on board. Trust me, you don't want to be pulled over and asked to produce them! Make sure you have all items on board that are required and be a courteous boater.

Not sure if your boat meets the Virginia requirements? The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadrons will perform a Vessel Safety Check (VSC) of your vessel and equipment free of charge. This inspection covers federal and state requirements. If your vessel meets all VSC requirements, you will receive a VSC decal. If your vessel fails to meet all requirements, no report is made to any law enforcement agency.

If you haven't taken a boating course, consider the official Boating Safety Online Course. Visit the other related sites and Happy Boating!

Doreen, we do...on his nose! The little guy has to be careful too. We have an 18ft sea doo and we just love it, perfect size and easy to maneuver. thanks for commenting!

This is a great Localism post, Debbie!  Love the pic of Duncan.  What kind of dog is he?  He looks a lot like our Cairn Terrier.

Patty & Scott, Duncan is a West Highland White Terrier. He's usually white, unless he's digging for chipmunks!

I live on the lake and no child 12 or under will be on one of my boats without wearing a jacket. Don't care if you are on the swim team kids will wear jackets. We have been very lucky on this lake and I hope we keep it that way. Thanks for your post. See yo on the water.

Barry, are you at SML? I agree, it's too easy to get into trouble and we keep extra jackets on board just in case. We almost took the boat out this past weekend, but too much rain. Thanks for commenting!
