April 16, 2007

CNN is broadcasting a Special Investigative Report on Campus Rage tonight and over the weekend. My daughter Kate and several of her friends were interviewed by CNN and ABC this week. This report doesn't focus just on the tragedy at Virginia Tech, but on other campus shootings as well. Hopefully it will shed some light on the warning signs of rage among mentally disturbed individuals and offer solutions to better protect our children on college campuses.

Memorials to 4/16/07

I took these images on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at Virginia Tech. The permanent memorial is located between the flags. A Day of Remembrance is scheduled for April 16, 2008. See the link for program details.

Debbie - All this is so tragic, so horrible.  Anything we can do to take preventive measures to make sure this doesn't happen again would be a giant step in the right direction.

Hey, Debbie... It's hard to believe it's been a year... time seems to go by so fast as I get older. Thank you for keeping the memory fresh. I will add the families, friends and all those affected by this tragic experience to my prayer list for continued strength. Take care.

It really seems like yesterday when all this happened. I never had to worry about such things when i was in college...and that's what it SHOULD be!  Kids shouldn't have this burden in their college years.

Jason, Bo and Ruthmarie, thank you. This has been such an emotional year and I think we're all still in shock. Please keep the Virginia Tech family in your prayers especially this week.

Hi Shellee, thanks for commenting. It makes me so sad, reliving this. Security is going to be especially tight on campus this week. It does make you think about sending your children away to college.

This type of tragedy is startling and assaults the senses of rational individuals. I do not know what can be done to recognize such threats before they happen. Apparently there are signs that are either ignored or not noticed. When I was a kid we did not have to worry about such things, a bully was about the worse thing, and they could be faced down. I am saddened whenever I hear about school shootings. It is an unfortunate that the 1966 University of Texas Tower shootings which shocked us are far too commonplace now. My thoughts are with you and the others who have endured this year.

Thanks Rich, I would like to say security has improved, policies changed but we haven't seen it. This administration knows about other problems and they've been ignored. Hopefully other schools are taking note. Thanks for your good thoughts.
