Wonder why people might not be reading your posts?
Ever thought about why readership & sharing of your posts is just not where you'd like it to be? I've wanted to share an idea that I've had for some time about the size & the color of text that we use while blogging.
Ever think about it? Do you ever go back & actually 'SEE' how your posts look out in the big wide world?
What color do you normally use when posting?
If you use the standard 'light gray' that is used here on ActiveRain or on your Wordpress site I think you are making a fatal error. If people can't see what you are writing - how long do you think they will stick around?
If they have to squint because the text is too small - how long will they put up with that before moving along?
Just another thought that you should go back & check the color of your text vs. your background color. Ever try to read gray text on a light gray background - it's maddening! I see so much of it lately I decided to share what might not be apparent here.
"I see" the problem all the time as the default colors change from website to website or social media site.
Make it black - change it back!
It will be easier to read & I'm sure will boost the sharing of your work.
I always increase the font size to 12 - occasionally 14 for emphasis.

Lynn,
The "wall of words" are the ones that don't even get a brief glance from me.

I do wish they would make default size at least 12pt

Lyn Sims ... as most know, I write the posts ... my marketing assistant wife does the typing and posting. We agreed a long time ago that mortgage info needed to be offered in small bites ... short paragraphs ... peppered with bold or colorful print when the most important info/links needed to stand out.
This comes from a guy that's had poor eye vision most of his life ... I know for a fact just how the type, font, and color can make or break what you're viewing ...

I tend to use mostly size 12 with 14 for emphasis. I try to use bold sparingly, but I like to use it to break things up a bit.

Alan: Yes & on outside blogs it's the same. If you change it here on AR, it transfers over.
Sandy & Norm: It's a shame not to read great info because of it.
Gene: Well, you've got a style now going & it's easy to read.
Nina: I'm not sure that most people use that feature.
Tammy: Pop that in the suggestion box. I agree.
Lenn: Thanks for your input.
Richard: When I see the post go on forever - I disappear.
Times New Roman in small font is a shortcut to the backspace key. People will NOT read dull-looking, hard to read type.
Lyn Sims - fonts and color are two most important characteristics of ANY writing.
Now, it's easy to say I used 'default' however, that extra efforts help grow readership
I can't stand to land on a wesbite and see the black background with white lettering. So hard on my eyes. I like an easy set up and you're right Lyn, if people can't read it (too small) they'll click away!
Interesting. Would be interesting whether AR knows about it. And if yes, is there the reason to keep it this way?

Hi there Lyn - thank you so much for this information. I do use black and white to make it easy - look at most newspapers - and yes, text must be squintproof!
I have been using Dark Blue, I have not checked the font size. I just assumed it was 12. Maybe I ought to check.

As it relates to ActiveRain, it may also be that people aren't commenting as much. Looking at the stats section, the average AR blogger may notice that views are down as well. So- maybe the title is also very important.
Lyn, I usually use size 12 for my text. Would be nice if AR would make that the default rather than the smaller size it is now.

When it comes to posting, size does matter and at least a 12 font so it is attractive and easy to read. Colors are suspect as they change and can be tough for some people to read
Always Preview posts before publishing. This is blogging 101! Great post, thanks for the reminder.
Lyn Sims -- Making a post readable is extremely important. Beyond font sizes and colors, spacing and size of paragraphs is also quite important. I like to use bullet text, bold and italics to make the copy easier to read.
