Creature Comforts we Take for Granted - A Day Without Water

Running Water by Silvia DukesYesterday morning, when I turned on the water tab in the bathroom nothing came out but a few drops.  We didn't have running water.  Not knowing, what happened and how long we would be without water, we started the day as best as possible under these conditions.

Luckily, we had plenty of bottled water on hand so brushing teeth and making coffee was not a problem. Of course, you can't shower with a bottle of water so that had to be put on hold.

Funny though, first thing that comes to mind is to remember whether you paid the water bill!  Well, we found out that there had been a break in one of the major water lines and the whole neighborhood was out of water.

There are a lot of things we use water for without giving a second thought.  It was a bit of a challenge to be without the convenience of running water readily available.

Toilet flushing was probably the biggest issue. Living by the water or being able to use pool water is definitely an option to fill up that water tank!

There was not much we could do except deal with the situation as best as possible.  We were just grateful knowing that the crew from the Hernando County water department was working hard to fix the problem even on a Sunday and Mother's Day as such.

Finally, our water came back on at 2:30 in the afternoon and we could finally shower!  It felt great! For the time being, it is recommended to boil water for cooking and drinking but that is just a very small inconvenience compared to being without running water.

While this was just a few hours of no running water, it really made me think how much we take for granted our modern conveniences like running water and how unprepared we really are when something like this happens.

It made us aware of what we could do to better prepare for unexpected outages whether it be water or power.  Hurricane season in Florida is just around the corner and there is always a possibility of outages because of a storm event.

Better get ready!

Running out of water could definitely create some inconveniences. A couple weekends age, we lost power for an entire morning due to thinderstorms. To work our way around, we decided to go out for breakfast and then do some shopping. The power then turned on right as we were walking in through the front door after we had just arrived home. It i nice to have a resposive party there for you in these situations. That must have been an unforgettabe Mother's Day!

Silvia being without water or electricity creates major changes in our day, and like you said we don't realize how inconvenient it is until it happens.

By the way I'm sure those you came in contact with were happy you had bottled water to brush you teeth with :) :) :)

That's definitely a problem with you don't have running water.  The toilets would be the biggest problem for sure.

Silvia, We all take the majority of these convenience for granted and do not realize their importance until we can use whatever it is.. Hurricane season as you said is around the corner. We have to worry about here as we are close the Gulf of Mexico.

Julie Morales  it was definitely not what we expected or had planned for the day!

Nicole Doty - Gilbert Real Estate Expert it's not that bad, at least we usually know at least a week ahead of time that one may be coming our way. We all prepare, stock up, and take precautions just in case and most times it blows right by us to either make landfall in some other state or goes back out to sea.

George Souto hahaha... also, I didn't realize how often in a day I wash my hands...

Chris Ann Cleland especially when you have several people living in the home. In a case like that, it may just be a good idea to spend the day elsewhere.

Robert (Bob) Gilbert  yes, you do get hit quite a bit by all the hurricanes that miss Florida!

Rob Thomas I heard it too, supposedly, they are supposed to limit their time in the shower even!

It really is amazing what we take for granted until we don't have it anymore. Water is certainly one of those things. I'm glad the problem was fixed for you.

Hi Silvia-imagine those countries where water is scarce and you see those woman carrying jugs of water for 5 miles a day. I bet there is not a whole lotta showering going on there!

Thanks for sharing this story. We do take so much for granted.

All of us need to be prepared for a water emergency by having enough water on hand to go for a least a couple of days in the event of a storm or damaged water lines.

Silvia it is amazing how we take this natural resource for granted.   I would be paniced without water in the morning, especially if the day was filled with appointments!

Marco Giancola  I imagine not!

Roy Kelley  you are so right. It can happen anytime anywhere.

Joan Cox I had showings scheduled for late afternoon and was happy the water came back on before then!

Hi Silvia Dukes PA, REALTOR, CRS, CIPS, SRES , Water and utilities are essential for all those that are not camping deep in the woods,  which is most of us. I was sort of laughing at Rob's comment.  I wrote  a post about it that I have been  hesitant about posting it since it is such a HOT topic around here.

Electirc and water are essential to me and when I don't have them I realize just how dependent I am. I am addicted to air conditioning and don't like to be hot and sweat.

Good morning Silvia. I never take water fore granted, none of us should. Maybe because of having run out of water a few times when I was growing up.
