Keeping Hydrated in the Hot Summer Months

Summer in Colorado always has one last bit of winter near Mother’s Day.  We got a good couple inches of snow over the weekend, and today the weather has shot back up to the 70’s to melt it all away.  Last year the latest it snowed was May 15th, so we shall see if yesterday’s storm is the end of it.  Once it starts feeling more consistently like summer it’s important to stay hydrated.  A daily schedule in Highlands Ranch property management has you out in the field meeting appointments or bunkering down in the office for hours at a time to get ready for that next lease.  It’s very important to stay hydrated when your work load increases and the weather steadily gets warmer.

To keep your organs working properly, the Institute of Medicine recommends 9 cups of water per day for women and 13 cups for men.  This should be increased for heavier people and those in hotter climates.  The best way to achieve this goal daily is to really get into a good routine focused around drinking consistently throughout the day and going to the bathroom about every 2-3 hours.  Carry a personalized water bottle at your desk and when you’re on the go.  If you can get one with measurements listed, or know the total volume of the bottle to monitor how fast you’re approaching your daily goal.  You can drink smaller amounts of water throughout the day instead of gulping down half your bottle at a time just to make the goal.  Practice taking a sip after each phone call or a big drink after an email.  You can add a slice of lemon, lime or cucumber to the water to improve the flavor, as well as putting a few ice cubes in there to chill it slightly.

Once you get into a daily routine you will find that it becomes second nature.  Never wait until you feel thirsty to start drinking water.  You have already lost at least two cups of total body water by that point.  One small activity you can do while maintaining your bathroom visits every couple of hours is to take the stairs to the next level bathroom from the floor in your office.  This gets the blood pumping in a small way, but is effective at breaking up the day so you’re not chained to your desk.  It’s amazing how far these little steps can take your personal health and mood each day.
