lower fountainsThe Fountain Displays across from the Conservatory at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania are currently undergoing a total renovation and upgrade, to be completed in 2017, with new digital controls and features.

When I saw the current state of affairs, I thought it looked like Pompeii (have seen pictures but never have been there) with a couple of stone arches about all that remained of the 1930's and 1950's workfountain ruins. One of the problems has been the "health and safety" issue of whether the balustrades retain their original spacing or if they will be forced to put plantings or guard rails between the 12' wide pathway of the balustrades at the top of the  "Italian Villa" behind and above the fountains. It would be a shame if the total Italian Water Gardenseffect was spoiled by construction of guard rails like a ride at Disney World.

But, the sun was shining and the Italian Water Gardens (left) at the other end of Longwood were looking good! We visitors are glad that this expansive and historic garden complex is open to the public and carrying on the legacy of the late P. S. DuPont!

Such a beautiful place.  I too hope that nothing is built that would ruin the scenery.

It would be awful if they spoiled the historic mood with guard rails! As someone said to me, "You go to Europe and historic sites look just like they did when they were built hundreds of years ago, allowing you to fall off a cliff if you so desire!"
