I was one of the lucky ones to get my Dot Realtor - Top Level Domain for Free for one year when they became available last year. I also opted to register my company name when that option became available last week at a 50% discount.
Branding in today's internet intensive business almost requires you to get those domains names now that they are available. The general public is easily trained to follow the latest and the greatest and if that means finding Realtor to buy or sell a home under this top level domain you better believe you should have a presence there.
That being said, the questions I want to ask is this - "Is NAR - the National Association of Realtors, taking advantage of its members by putting such a heavy price on a domain as the $70 renewal rate when godaddy, hostgater, etc. domains sell for $9.99*/$12.95 a year???
Considering that only members of NAR are the only ones able to use the domains why would they hit us with such high renewal fees? I am used to being taken advantage by other real estate related companies like Realtor.com, Zillow/Trulia, DocuSign, etc. to generate leads off our own listings, but having your own organization hit you with this for some reason is not sitting well with me.
Will you keep it? Can we start our own petition to get them to make the renewal more in line with other domain providers? Did anyone else opt to get their domain names?
