Spring Weekend Activities For The Whole Family in Clark County

By
Industry Observer with Nature As Neighbors

Choose From Many Outdoor and Indoor Events

This weekend offers many opportunities to get outdoors and explore the area, let your kids operate heavy equipment, or connect indoors with multi-generational resources.

The Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge is offering a naturalist-led hike on the Oaks to Wetland Trail this Sunday, May 17th starting at 8:00 am. The relatively flat, accessible trail provides the whole family with an opportunity to view waterfowl, migrating song birds, and wildlife in their natural habitat. Bird expert Ron Escano will lead the group along the seasonal path that winds through native Oregon wild oak, cedar, fir and wetlands.

While you're at the Refuge, be sure to check out the Cathlapotle Plankhouse, an exact replica oCathlapotle Plankhousef the cedar houses inhabited by native tribes who lived in the area. Built by volunteers, and based on archaeological and historical data, the plankhouse represents a link to the area's environment and native heritage.

Dozer Day Another Way to Get Outdoors With Your Kids

From nature hikes and serene surroundings, you can literally "switch gears" and take your kids to Dozer Day at the Clark County Fairgrounds this Saturday and Sunday May 16-17.  It's a chance for kids to operate heavy equipment in a supervised environment, sit in fire trucks and an ambulance, and learn about community safety.  Discounted tickets are available in advance, or at the gate for an additional $3.00. The event, which started in Camas in 2008, runs from 11:00 am to 4 pm both days. Proceeds benefit the non-profit Nutter Family Foundation, which focuses on the needs of children.

Multi-Generational Resources at 50+ Expo on Sunday

Families face a number of challenges as parents - and children - reach senior status.  The Connections Expo on Sunday May 17th will provide families with opportunities to learn about healthy, active lifestyles and resources for seniors and multi-generational households. More families are choosing to live together again, and it requires creative ideas, planning, and community resources to make a successful transition. The event, which runs from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Vancouver Hilton Convention Center, is sponsored by Retired Seniors and Volunteer Program (RSVP) and the Vancouver City Messenger.  A suggested donation of $5.00 will benefit RSVP of the Human Services Council and its activities.

Hi Debb - It looks like a busy weekend in Clark County. Is there an upper age limit for "kids" operating the heavy equipment? - I've always wanted to do that.

Dick Greenberg For you, I'm sure they'd make an exception. Grown-ups who are "kids at heart," are always endearing.

Will - Hurray! Can't wait to see and hear your videos.

That photograph is absolutely gorgeous Debb! This is something I would enjoy very much. I like events that invites the public into the wild do do something other than sit alone and stare at their cell phone messages or search the INTERNET for information that probably doesn't really matter at all.

Experiencing nature, breathing in fresh air, being with family or around other people, those are the things elders miss the most when they can't get out and they are stuck in some convalescent home for the assisted living.
