Did you hear the rumbling last night or feel the earth shake between 9:30pm and 10:00pm? If so, you can rest assured, it was only the Largest Fireworks Display in the world ..... Thunder Over Louisville.

Thunder Over Louisville is the annual official start of the Derby Season. The Kentucky Derby is run the first Saturday in May and Thunder is always held two weeks before. It is also considered one of the top 100 celebration destinations for spectators in North America.

Thunder Over Louisville is an ALL DAY affair. During the day is an air show with over 100 military aircraft putting on demonstration and then at 9:30pm the Largest Fireworks display in the world starts. Both the air show and the fireworks take place over the Ohio River in front of Downtown Louisville. The fireworks are launched from two barges totaling 400 feet in length. Typically, the show, it is attended by close to a million people on both sides of the river.

The Fireworks display is choreographed to the sound of music which has a different theme each year. Also accompanying the fireworks are numerous howitzers which are placed on the second street bridge and are fired in tune with the show. Another interesting aspect is the waterfall of flames. This flaming waterfall is 1 mile long and comes off the edge of the Second Street Bridge. The entire show will last for 28 minutes.

The show is so popular that it is filmed and then replayed on the Armed Forces network on July 4th around the world. It has even been featured in a "Discover Channel" presentation.

Thunder usually happens Rain or Shine because it can not be rescheduled in the event of bad weather. There is too much which has gone into the show with the aircraft and fireworks, that it always goes as planned.

If you ever get an opportunity to watch it, you won't be disappointed.

The "Derby" is an event I haven't missed in so many years I can't recall.

One of my agents telephoned me about one minute prior to the race one year.

"Have you lost your mind?"  The Kentucky Derby is about a minute away."

He must live in a cave.
