What is the Difference between a Sales Associate and a Broker?

By
Education & Training with Rowlett Real Estate School

What is the difference between a sales person and a broker? A real estate salesperson or broker is a professional licensed by their state to help consumers with real estate matters.  A salesperson must work under a managing or principal broker, this is the broker who is in charge of the brokerage firm.

Some states only license brokers, in that case, new brokers may be called broker associates and required to work under a managing or principal broker. Much like a salesperson.

A managing, principal or employing broker is a licensed broker who is in charge of a brokerage firm and the salespersons or broker associates of the firm.

Typically to become a managing broker at least two years of active license experience and further course work and sometimes license exams are required.

No matter if you are a real estate salesperson, broker associate or managing broker the job is the same work with buyers, sellers, tenants and landlords to help them reach an agreement.

In Illinois they did away with sales associates two years ago and up'd the bar on what education is needed to practice in this great state. Now there is only two choices, Broker and Managing broker and the different between Broker and Sales associate is quite a bit of CE. Sorry I can't tell you the exact classes or hours Captain Wayne but I am a broker.

Captain

I wish CA would follow Illinois' advice and make it much tougher to get a RE license. There are way too many bad agents out here. cheers cvc

This is good information for prospective agents.

More states should follow the lead of Illinois.

I agree guys, I would like to see it do that down here as well. I've been following a lot of the law changes they have been doing here in Florida and I fully believe that they are moving to change us to broker only in the future here as well.

Arizona is set up with Sales Associates and then the Brokers. You can be either an associate broker or the employing broker. I hope to take that next step later this year to become an associate broker. I love and welcome the extra training needed

This is a good explanation Wayne. In TN we call it Principal Broker and Broker. I am a Broker. Those that haven't tested or have the experience yet are at a lower licensing level call Affiiliate Broker.

Ah I did not know that Debbie Reynolds, thank you for the clarification. Are those the only two levels you have there? Like Tammy Adams ~ Realtor Maricopa, AZ said above, we do the sales agent, then after 2years experience we can test to be broker. At that time you can hold a broker license but work under another broker (being a broker associate - same level as sales but with more knowledge) or break away and become a broker in full.

I believe that when it comes to sales, focusing on communication with customers is important in any field, and I can say that such specialists should constantly improve their skills in order to keep up with the market conditions. In my case, working with Sales course make a great change in my business and increased sales, so people in that field should think about trainings way more often.
