This is hilarious, Neal.  Had the type of day yesterday that made me want to write a similar post.  Within the first 2 weeks on the market for a new listing, I had the virtual tour shot and posted, 2 agent caravans, vflyer completed, promoted at 3 different networking groups, posted on my blog, 500 full color just listed postcards mailed to targeted potential buyers ... and got crusified over the photo on my color flyer.  I mean absolutely lambasted.  I did the only thing I could do.  I gave the listing back.  Life's too short, especially in this market.  As a Realtor, I blame myself ;)

Neal: This is so funny, and yet at the same time NOT.

One thing about our business is we must have skin as thick as leather to survive because honestly, our clients will always BLAME us. One time only I cried because I took it personally when someone "blamed" me. I think that was about 20 years ago....

Then in Scarlett O'Hara fashion, I picked myself up and vowed I would never, ever, take anything personally again in the business world, and told myself that accepting blame was part of my job.

I also tell everyone who wants to get in the business this...if you aren't strong enough to take the blame even when it is not your fault, stay away from this business.

So my policy is this: when things go wrong, I always tell everyone right away and accept all of the blame. It is funny how that always seems to diffuse the situation. Everyone involved feels bad because they KNOW it really isn't my fault, but I am there front and center willing to take the blame.

They actually try to convince me that it isn't my fault. Is this reverse psychology? I don't know, but this policy seems to work for my Realtors as well as my clients.

Rick,

Just change the station on your radio:)

Bill,

Thats why I wrote it....and I wasn't even blamed for anything!

Scott,

I won't mention the fact that even if it is your fault...you guys always say that you're not a party to the contract.

Steve,

I also thought if I could make it a little funny that no one would take it personally...but you can still blame the Realtor(R).

Robert,

Even the media blames us!

Paul,

I guess in our business...the clients are just hard to please sometimes no matter what we do to make it better.

Jim,

I know you love those sayings...we were talking about it on the phone.

Janet,

As long as we continue to work hard and get the job done....there still can be a reason just to blame us. I once had a client blame me for selling his home too quick...I asked him if he wanted me to hold back the offer a few days...he laughed and thanked me.

Ken,

Then it's your fault and not mine:)

Missy,

I always have a few laying around in my bag:)

Isn't it the truth.  Buyers strike out at the Realtor® when they don't understand what's going on, are met with unrealized expectations, make misrepresentations and can't accept responsibility, or just plain alway have to blame someone else for anything bad in their lives or any disappointment.

I have no problem with the buyer or seller blaming the Realtor®, as long as it's "the other" Realtor® involved.

Hey Neal - oh yeah, it's the blame game and we're the number one target!  Personal accountability by those who really should be stepping up to the plate would go a long way to taking some of that blame off our shoulders.  And then actually explaining the processes and setting realistic expectations would help with the rest.....

Neal- The truth is - we are to blame.  We just need to educate our clients with a new "blame" list.

* When the buyers are sellers are so far apart that they appear to be on different planets, yet a successful negotiation makes both parties feel like winners - blame the Realtor®

* When the inspector scares the &%# out of the buyers, yet someone calms them down and works thru each issue - blame the Realtor®

* When the mortgage is turned down because the bank used an appraiser from across the state, and comps are presented that enable them to reappraise and approve the loan - blame the Realtor®

* When time is of the essence and someone stays on top of all parties, to make sure the dates are met - blame the Realtor®

Hi Neal,What a great list and now you have even more to add with the contributions here in the comments. Neal you should send this in to the newspapers in your community. I would bet at the very least you could get into the Editorial pages. But I would publish in the main paper and think of the publicity. Do something creative with this one.

People love to get a message disguised as slightly humorous but with a bit of a sting. You single handedly could make a lot of people feel guilty and maybe even change they way they think.

I couldn't agree more. Why are we lightning rod when things go bad. Granted there are those out there that may mis-guide someone but, for the most part the things that go wrong are in no way our fault. There's a interesting thread on my local craigslist rant and rave section entitled..."Why are ALL realtors liars?"

Gotta love the ignorance. I guess everyone needs someone to point their fingers at.

I'm trying to make light of a situation that most of those come into play....even if you explain up front some just don't listen until then end...it's the smart one's who realize that most of those are out of our control.

James,

Underwriters don't care...they get the file after it's already approved by the LO or MB so if they get it and have changes and it falls through...we still get blamed because they claim they aren't a party to the contract when in essence they really are....if you look at the financing clause it states whether or not there is a mortgage...but we still get the blame.

This is so true.  The realtor always is blame for everything especially if it is out of our control. LOL

Neal - this is great and I can see why it is Featured.  I think we have all experience ... ALL of these!  This should be on NAR's front cover ...

Serena,

I'm glad you agree and had fun with it!

Derek,

Yeah right...I'd love to see NAR post this there...I doubt they would expose this there.

And when the rental house won't sell, the Realtor blames the property manager!  The property manager goes home and kicks the dog.

Robert,

Then you can blame the Realtor(R) for animal cruelty and that wouldn't be nice...I have a dog and would be pissed off.

Neal I loved your post.  I can't think of anything you left out so it must be your REALTOR's fault! Ha Ha! I needed a laugh.

Hmm,

One big item that the realtor does control is the price that is set, for sale and purchase, because realtors are supposed to be "experts" in their field. We all know that buyers and sellers rely on the information that is provided by realtors, including price information. Take a look at this article, it pretty much speaks the truth about the matter:

TO: by realtors_are_pointless_and_will_be_squeezed_out_of_the_industry, another propaganda bull crap article!!

DID YOU KNOW...that one can take a computer...use their fingers to tap out keys in "words" and collect them together into "sentences" and "paragraphs" and say anything they want and write an article?  And it doesn't have to even be true!!

That article is full of TOTAL ABSOLUTE CRAP!  No wonder this country is so screwed up with idiots like these people "teaching" our college students!!  Just the one statement alone...

Others say it's not that simple. "The broker, 99% of the time, is the agent of the seller, so the broker doesn't have any duty to the buyer," said Wharton real estate professor Georgette Chapman Phillips.

What a STUPID WOMAN!  99% of the time, AGENTS DO NOT REPRESENT THE SELLER!!  Can she spell "Buyer Agency".  In EVERY transaction, someone represented the "buyer".

I've been a broker for 34 years and I ALWAYS caution my buyers to never get those fancy frilly loans...stick to the basic 30 yr fixed and if you can...go 15 year or a Bi-Monthly payout.

Articles like that don't infuriate me because of WHAT is said but WHO says it!  Those idiots ought to be on the unemployment line!!

Hi David,

The above commenter is entitled to their own opinion and it's obvious that the above commenter doesn't want to expose their real identity but I imagine their past experiences with Realtors wasn't a positive one. That's their problem...I would even read the article for two reasons...number one...I never read any links left on my blogs as they are considered spam to me. The readers have the right to move on from my blog if they don't like what they are reading yet...the only way for me to remove their link is to delete it. I have actually had many of my past and present clients call me and tell they thought the post was funny and interesting so I have to take the good with the bad but it doesn't bother me one bit. I'm sure they can find their own deals without an agent and I probably would rather not even work with someone with that demeanor. I mostly represent sellers and I can tell you no matter how much you explain to them where a home should be priced...many of them want it priced the way they want it and I'll even ask them to put something in writing that I advised a different price than the one they want.

It's probably just another simulated disgruntled situation so who do you blame? The Realtor of course? Don't sweat it.

LOL....Neal....you're so right.  I get all huff and puffed up every time someone posts something totally out in left field, but what hit me is these "Educators" teaching our youth misinformation.  That just goes all over me.

Your right about one thing...99% of the time that someone does NOT identify themselves...they either can't defend what they say or are afraid to.  Rather cowardly.

David,

I tend not to worry about that too much...anyone can write something...whether it's really true is another thing.

Realtors were the auctioneers of the housing bubble. I wish I worked in a profession where there is no accountabilty. The code of ethics is a complete joke. In my 30 years of buying and or selling homes I have only dealt with one true honest realtor and now he is retired. Anybody should have access to the MLS database

Bob,

I agree with you about ethics. Good agents in this business look better because of the bad agents that have no idea how to service a client. We have to be fair to both sides butthere will always be some blame if there is an issue. As long as we are charged a fee to use our MLS then the public cannot access it. If that's the case then either they remove my fees or make the public pay the same fees to access it.

CRS magazine..ran an article last year (I believe) that also mentioned that when time slow down, many persons directly blame their real estate agent in court via a lawsuit.  They paid to much, that was the price the agent told me to pay etc...!

Jim,

Yes...didn't you hear about the Remax agent that was sued because a buyer said they overpaid for their home so they blamed the agent?...and guess who won that in court. The agent and not the buyer.
