Historic Portsmouth New Hampshire - Scenes Around Downtown Portsmouth

Portsmouth NH - The Old CIty Hall Building in Downtown Portsmouth - Ann Cummings

I am lucky to live in such a beautiful and historic town as Portsmouth NH!  And I wanted to show off some of the wonderful and beautiful places and people and things that I love about living here in the Portsmouth Seacoast areas of New Hampshire and Maine.  I love living here and making my home in Portsmouth NH, and sharing pictures from around the area.

I hope you'll enjoy these pictures today that show off our beautiful and historic downtown Portsmouth New Hampshire!

We have a lot of old brick buildings downtown, most are the homes of restaurants, shops, galleries, boutiques, and more.  Those are on the street level floors, and most everything above the street level are residences - condos and apartments, with a few offices mixed in.  If you love being right in the heart of all the action, then you'll love living in Portsmouth's Market Square area, which is the heart of downtown.

Market Square in Downtown Portsmouth NH - Historic Church is the center of all       Portsmouth NH - Historic Athaneum Building in Downtown

All year long, we have all kinds of fun events and activities that go on in the downtown area.  Some of those fun family festivities are:  Market Square Day, Bow Street Fair, Portsmouth Criterium, Portsmouth Jazz Festival, visits from Tall Ships, various holiday parades, a variety of races - walking, biking, running, Historic Portsmouth Walking Trail, Chowderfests, Chili Cook-offs, concerts, and more.

Portsmouth NH - Market Street Shops and Buildings       Popovers Bakery and Cafe - Downtown Portsmouth NH

Portsmouth NH is full of history, and we've got some beautiful buildings and historical homes right downtown as well.  The riverfront in downtown is always bustling with activity, and you can take cruises and tours from the docks downtown as well.  Portsmouth is a real working port, and we see ships from all over the world pull into port here year-round.

Enjoy this pictorial tour of downtown Portsmouth New Hampshire - even better, come for a visit!  If you do, I bet you'll want to make this wonderful area your home, just as all of us who are fortunate enough to live here do.

And if you're thinking about buying or selling real estate in any of these areas, send me an email or give me a call - I'd love to help!

Do you have some Seacoast pictures you'd love to see posted here to share with others about our area?
Send them along and we'll post them for you.

That restaurant courtyard looks appealing to me. Are there a lot of condos downtown for people that want to have that urban vibe?

Ann.... a nice historic town.... but I stopped by to say that I love the new look of your blog..... one of the better ones that I have viewed...  love it...  I wish I could do the same, but mine is not meant to be local...  it's to reach a national audience... any ideas?  In any case, love the look.  great job...

Ann - You live in a history book! I've always thought your town really does look like the stories we used to read about in school about when the nation was founded. How fun for you!

Andrew - thank you sir!  I would think our area's largest employers are Liberty Mutual, the area hospitals, and we also have some large high-tech corporations in the area - Lonza being one of them, and they employer a large number of people.

Melina - we have a number of restaurants, bakeries, and cafes that have that courtyard type of setting - a great way to spend some pleasant time outdoors.  Yes, there are condos all over the downtown area, perfect for living right in the thick of things!

Lynda - I'm glad you continue to enjoy my posts.  I love showing off my areas - it's so easy to do because I live in such a fabulous place!  And thanks for the nice comment on the new look on my blog, too!

Thank you for the comments - I really appreciate them!

Jeff - a very nice historic town for sure!  You should come up for a visit sometime!

Thank you so much for the comments about the customizing I did.  I have to admit it took me awhile last night.  I had to watch Jeff Turner's video over a couple of times, and then tinkering with different pictures to find some that would actually work - took me awhile, but I think I'll leave this one up here for awhile.  I went through 3 or 4 different looks last night before I settled on this one.

Thanks again for the nice comments!

Kathy - I'm glad you enjoyed this post, and thanks for checking out the links. I often wonder if people click on the links - I always include a few links that help add to what I'm writing about.  If you ever come back this way, we'll have to get together.

Linda - I never thought about it like that, but I guess I do live in a 'history book', in a way.  We are surrounded by all kinds of history here, that's for sure.  And it's all so beautiful, too.  Plus, being right here on the coast with the Atlantic Ocean here at our door, it just doesn't get any better than that, at least that's how I feel!  Come for a visit!!

Many thanks for reading and for the comments!

Hi Ann, I love your coastal backdrop! We have quite a bit of coastline in Michigan too and one of the biggest festivals over here is the Coast Guard Festival.  Do you have an event like that in Portsmouth?  Just wondering because you mentioned a variety of Festivals.  Sounds and looks like a delightful community.

Ann New England is full of beautiful old historic town and Portsmouth New Hampshire is certainly one of the ones that deserve that distinction.

Hi Lola - thanks for the comment on the backdrop!  No, we don't have a Coast Guard Festival, but we do have tons of other festivals here.  Portsmouth is an awesome place to live, always plenty to do!

Hi George - yep, Portsmouth is one that definitely deserves that distinction.  As a working port, we get to see all kinds of ships come and go right alongside these wonderful historic buildings right downtown.  You're not too far away.....   ;-)

Thanks for the comments!

Hi Ray - we do certainly retain the wonderful charm and character this area is known for, and we're right up to date with all of today's modern needs - the perfect place to live!

Hi Deb - thank you for those nice comments!  Only 'almost'??  ;-)   The buildings and homes here in this area do provide plenty of eye-candy for those who love the variety of architecture we have here.  I love the downtown area and all the detail in the beautiful brick buildings we have - I never tire of marveling at those.  And our homes offer just as much variety here, too.

Thanks for the comments!

Hi Judy - glad you enjoyed the pictures!  I love that little tug boat, too.  It belongs to one of the businesses right there along the river and they offer it up for tours for small groups of people.

Portsmouth is an awesome place to live - I LOVE living here, and always relish coming back home when I've been away anywhere!

Ann - Just a wonderful state and town.  We were up in NH for the Mooseman IronMan on the 8th.  It was great to visit after such a long time.  We go to the cape  because all my husband's family is there.  As a child growing up we went north and most often to New Hampshire.  No wonder so many Massachusetts folk have moved there.  Just love it.  So much to offer.  You do a great post.  Have a super Sunday.
