What is "special trash" and how do I get rid of it?

So, you're going to be moving and here's some items that require special ways to get rid of it.

1) Paint. Just make sure that your latex paint is hard and dry. If it is, then it can go out in the trash.

2) Oil based paint. If you happen to have some oil based paint then you have a Household Hazardous Waste item. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency would like you to call them at 217-785-8604 or visit their website: www.epa.state.il.us

3) Stains, paint thinners and solvents. Again, these items are HHW...in fact, some are even explosive if left out in the sun. Dispose of these items correctly.

4) Old gasoline and antifreeze. Again, dangerous material so take it to a Household Hazardous Waste collection center. Visit the above website and find where your nearest center is.

5) Used Computers. If you can donate it, great. Just make sure to clean up the hard drive. Now, if it's so old that no one wants it, then check with Dell and Apple computers. There are valuable metals used inside these machines that can be recycled if properly removed.

6) Paper. If you're throwing out anything with personal information on it...shred it! Again, shred those papers.

7) Old prescriptions. DO NOT FLUSH drugs into the water system! There are proper ways to destroy these.

Hi Eileen - to dry up latex paint, add some kitty litter to it.  That's what we were told to do by our garbage company recently when we had some to throw away.

Eileen - great list of those hard-to-get-rid-of things - this is a keeper!  Thanks for putting this together.  I'm going to share this with my clients.

Thanks,
Ann
