Sometimes, home owners don’t consider the possibility of a burglary until something bad happens - a break-in, a car theft or any other unfortunate event that violates their sense of security. You can never predict when something like this will occur, but there are plenty of things that can be done to make the home less appealing to intruders.
Make it a habit to lock your doors and windows. Don’t let a forced entry be the reminder that you need to lock up. It only takes a moment to do this on your way in and out. Thieves especially like to gain access through the rear of the home because it is less obvious from the street. If you don’t go into your backyard often, consider placing a lock on the gate for some additional security.
Install an alarm system. Some people have the perception that home security systems are costly, but the reality is, there are options available in every price point. Shop around for a subscription-based service that will give you that extra peace of mind at night and during the day when you are at work. More often than not, the warning stickers in the windows will be enough to deter would-be intruders.
Hide a key if you must, but be creative. If you think you are being clever by placing a key under a flower pot of the front door mat, think again. Infiltrators usually check the most obvious places that will allow easy entry. If you need to leave a key somewhere, just in case, try to outsmart potential trespassers and use a place that no one would ever think to look.
Pretend to be home – all the time. Planning on heading off for a vacation? Part of your trip planning should involve arrangements for your home. If you are leaving during the winter, have someone available to leave tire tracks in your driveway, shovel the snow and bring in the mail. It’s usually less apparent during the rest of the year, but it never hurts to have someone check in. Put your lights on timers and, if possible, have a car parked in the driveway.
Regardless of where you live, a break-in can happen anywhere. Be proactive about protecting your home, and use these simple tips to prevent an unfavorable situation.
