New Fairfield, CT Proposes $44 Million Budget

The town of New Fairfield, Connecticut, has proposed a $44 Million budget for next year.  This includes both the town and the school budgets.

The proposed town budget is $9.8 Million, or a 2.6% increase over the current budget.
The proposed schools budget is $34.2 Million, or a 3.4% increase over the current budget.
Combined, these proposals represent a 2.8% increase over the current combined budgets.

If these budgets pass, a homeowner who's home has an assessed value of $250,000 would see a $142 increase in next year's property taxes.

These proposed budgets will be presented to the Board of Finance next week, and a public hearing on the proposals is scheduled for March 3.

Of course, these budget proposals, and the planned increase in property taxes, are in addition to the $109 Million bond request that the New Fairfield schools' superintendent has recently requested for school renovations.

The local property tax in Connecticut is broken but I don't see it getting fixed anytime soon.  Small, less wealthy towns, in the Eastern part of the state look forward to challenging budget seasons.  Unfunded state and federal mandates and aging school infrastructure just add to the problems.

Linda- Yes, there is a major problem with the property tax system here.  Many people in my town had there taxes increase by $4,000 or more during the last revaluation.  That's rough on homeowners.  My own house, which is a new build, has taxes about $3,000 more than we expected.

But, at least this proposed budget for New Fairfield is a small increase, percentage-wise, at only 2.8%.  That's apparently the lowers proposed increase in the area.  The problem we're going to have is with the $109 Million the school superintendent wants for school renovation.  That will add another $2,000++ to my own property taxes.  Combined, we're talking about taxing people out of their homes, and that concerns me.

Hopefully the town residents will reign in the school superintendent's grand spending plan.

(I sometimes miss California, where property taxes were based on the purchase price and did not fluctuate based on town and school budgets...)
