Three times in the last two weeks I have entered homes with buyers who were almost immediately turned off by the darkness within.

In all cases, it was just a matter of shades, blinds or drapes being drawn in combination with a lack of sufficient lighting to begin with.

All the buyers made comments about the home being dark.  As we assessed each case, every home would have been improved significantly with having the window treatments open to let the natural light in.

Additionally, a few of the rooms were quite large and only lit by a lamp or two recessed lights.  Just not enough artificial lighting to support the size of the room.

Further, many of the rooms could have benefited by lightening up the paint color. While the colors might have been somewhat attractive, they run the risk of appealing to less buyers but they also brought further darkness to dimly lit rooms.

Many buyers today prefer the trendy slightly darker hardwood flooring which does look attractive, but again, if the room has little light, the flooring will only make the room look darker and smaller.

Lighten up flooring and carpeting where necessary. If there is older dark paneling on the walls, consider painting them a light color.  It will make a huge difference.

Good lighting in a room not only attracts buyers in a positive way but also has the added benefit of making a room look larger.  Sellers should be sure all lights have working bulbs and any fixtures with glass are crystal clear and free of cobwebs.

Sellers -- If your home is being shown, open all blinds and shades and even turn on the lights for the buyers if this is possible. It will definitely make a better impression upon entering and navigating through the home.

Brightness adds Cheer

Therefore,

You will have Cheery Buyers who might love the home enough to place an offer.

Great choice of reblog!  Light is so important. A dark home will instantly depress potential buyers like a weight on their chest! A bright home will inject energy in them as they enter.

I'm surprised the listing agent didn't open the blinds prior to the showing????
