Who Are Millennials and What is their Economic Status in the US

1. There has been so much news about the generation called 'Millennials' so what is their age group?

Millennials are younger generation born between 1980's and early 2000's.

2. Should Real Estate Agents care about Millennials?

Absolutely as they are the new consumer and the younger working class ages 18-35 will soon be 35% of this nations work force.

3. What is unique about this group?

They are the most educated, very liberal and most culturally diverse of all the working class groups.

4. Is their a difference between male and female Millennials in the workplace?

Yes, males have always made higher wages and more men worked while women stayed home but the gap is narrowing greatly and women are making higher salaries. Many professionals are paid the same whether they are men or women. It is a big advancement to have labor market equality in our nation.

5. Do Millennials start out with debt in the working place?

Yes, it is more likely they will go to college and if they can not afford it, they will take out student loans and pay them off for the next 20-30 years.

6. Is it a big priority for Millennials to buy a house right away?

Stats disagree here as many sociologists say no that they will stay at home with their parents or rent a place for several years or more. But stats do show that this group is out searching the internet for houses daily.

7. Is the internet a big part of the Millennials life?

Yes, they are on social media sites 24X7, research the market on real estate sites, and many do their work on the computer so their skills far exceed most other generations therefore it is a big part of their everyday life.

8. Will school loan debt be a big problem for Millennials to buy a house?

Not unless they are heavily burdened with loans and not making a very high income. Years ago, lenders expected the graduating students to pay off their loans but now the loans are so much higher and it spans across a huge generation of new young workers.

9. Do Millennials have the same dreams as the older generations?

No, they want to live in urban areas, and really do not want to wait to save money to buy a house. Older generations used to save by pinching pennies until they had a substantial down-payment but nowadays the younger buyers want to put very little down or will just rent in an expensive townhouse and not worry about saving.

Thank you posting ths.  Make he think about the hippies who were anti-establishment only to become leaders in the corporate world.  Generational patterns change over time.  I most delighted thaa Mellinnials are well educated, hence more openminded.

Good morning, I believe that stat that Millennial will relocate due to the fact that can not find the size house that fits their needs in the city.

There are many articles and surveys about millennials that contradict some of your perspectives. Most millennials unfortunately are dependent on government and their parents according to most surveys I have seen, so buying property or saving money to acquire property isn't a priority unless they get financial assistance from their parents.

Concentrating on consumers IMO who are ready and financially able to buy today is the target market regardless of their generation.

I think the Millenials dreams and goals will change as they age.  It has happenned with the other demographics.

Regarding #8--I see many parents gifting down payments so their millenial kids can purchase a house.

Dear Kristin,

Interesting. The single Millenials I know often love the city for being able to walk home from the bars & clubs, but once they have children, many find backyards & the burbs more attractive. Different strokes for different folks in this group too.

Hi Joan Whitebook - It is a whole new generation for real estate.

Hi Scott Gleason - Glad you enjoyed my post. I did quite a bit of research before writing it.

Hi Laura Cerrano - There are a lot of articles out there with conflicting ideas. It is just a theory and not a science. The more we know, the better for our business.

Hi Pamela Seley, REALTOR® - I agree and the top of article says urban living but C.A.R. says Surburban. I think urban living is correct.

Hi Gita Bantwal - Glad you stopped by to comment. Have a great week.

Hi MaryKay Shumway - Thanks,  and I was very surprised.

Hi Michael Setunsky - There is a lot of analysis going on about Millenniums.

Hi Rob Arnold - It has been hard as the lender rules are so strict now. Hopefully they will learn from prior mistakes made in this nation.

Hi Paula McDonald - My kids too and same; they live well, highly educated, and perfer city (urban) living.

Hi Frank Castaldini - So many of our leaders in the industry started on a dime but had creative ideas. Our prior generations strived for education and buying a home but this new generation may have it easier with their income.

Hi Ed Silva - I totally agree.

Hi Sam Shueh - I certainly will share.

Hi Georgie Hunter - They seem to like that urban living including my kids.

Hi Captain Wayne - Rowlett Real Estate School - Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Praful Thakkar - Yes, I certainly agree with you.

Hi Frank Rubi, MBA - Stats say most do not live in their home more than 5 yeas so probably will move outward where they have more interior space and land.

Hi Kimo Jarrett - I read many conflicting articles but most have the same basics. I think fico scores and good credit history is not the most important for some.

Hi Gene Riemenschneider - I think you are right. We will see changes shortly.

Hi Jim Miner - Yes, their needs and patterns will change with time and maturity.

Hi Mary Hutchison, SRES, ABR - Yes I see that too. Good thing our generation has saved money to give to our kids.
