Realtors as Trainers

Lately, I've been getting lots of unsolicited e-mail (i.e., spam) from Realtors who have evidently stopped selling real estate in order to train others.  Now, this "training' is not about how to write a contract or how to market your clients' listings.  It's about how to make tons of money with short sales and foreclosures.  Most of it is really not about helping out clients who might also be investors.  It's about me spending my money to learn how to spend more of my money to invest in foreclosures and short sales so I can, in turn, make tons of money.

Are you dizzy, yet?

The thing about a lot of these offers is that they come from people whose names I recognize as being local Realtors.  I don't know them personally.  I used to see them on grocery carts and bus stops.  Now, I guess they decided e-mail marketing is easier and "training" other Realtors is probably an easier way [for them] to make money [for them].

Hey, I'm all for entrepreneurs going out there to find ways to create an income for themselves and, in a general way, I would much rather have a practicing (or recently practicing) Realtor teaching about real estate.  Yet, there's something about this trend that just doesn't seem quite right.  Maybe it's because these Realtors are having such a hard time actually selling real estate that they decided to branch out.

It puts me in mind of an old saying: "Those who can, do.  Those who can't, teach."

But maybe I'm just being cynical.

I agree with you.  Very unproductive for us agents working hard to keep with the bills.  Thanks for sharing.  Lu

i have seen in my market Realtor's that have had only 3 years experance  in the Real Estate world teaching classes. I know this because some started when I did. I will not take these classes I prefer someone that really knows what the ins and outs are. Experience specks volumes to me. I can read books on my own...

Thanks for the thoughts.  I agree as well.  For me, a relatively new Realtor, the best way to learn is to observe my market and see who is having the most success.  Then I contact them and offer to buy them a cup of coffee.  The road to success anywhere I think is to do the things those succeeding do.  Rick

I totally disagree with this statement "Those who can, do.  Those who can't, teach" but I too am getting the unwanted spam from so called educators trying to sell their stuff.

But please don't lump us all together in that category.

Happy Spring.

Could there be a different method to the madness?, Do you think this may be a recruiting technique under the veil of I'll show you how to make more money, and by the way why don't you come work for me because I'm so smart.. Or maybe not?

If someone has an idea and they are able to help others improve, then I say they can surely market...whether you choose to buy or not is your choice.

Chuck -  You're absolutely right.  I was kinda thinking it was more in line with the late night infomercials. "Get Rich. Buy My Stuff". That reels in people who can least afford it.  But it is a choice.

Steve -  It could be a recruiting technique.  I know Keller Williams in my area does a lot of CE for free in order to attract agents.  My guess is that the e-mail I get is not about recruiting.

Monika - It's not my intention to lump everyone together.  I have been inspired and educated by some fine trainers who used to do real estate and by some who are still practicing Realtors.  I think most of this new crop are looking for a quick buck from a vulnerable audience.

Rick - Excellent practice!

Sharon - amen.

Lu - I hear ya! I need to pay for the marketing of my clients' listings

I get them too.  In droves.  Geez!  I've forgotten more real estate than these so called teachers will ever learn.

My junk box gets emptied several times a day.

Same thing in the mortgage industry.  It is a little ridiculous out there right now...
