June 2015 Is National Home Ownership Month

June 1st, 2015 kicks off National Homeownership Month! This year, "Preserving The Dream" is the theme for the month-long recognition of the importance home ownership plays in American life, in American communities, and in the American economy.

“Homeownership Month" is a time to reaffirm the important role that ‘home’ plays for our families and the neighborhoods where they live,” said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan.  “Owning a home has historically been the principal vehicle for Americans to build equity, start businesses, put kids through college, and retire with comfort and dignity.  After all we’ve been through, we must stand by an institution that has helped build our nation’s middle class.”

National Homeownership Month began as a week-long celebration/recognition of homeownership during the Clinton presidency in 1995. In 2002, President George W. Bush proclaimed June as National Homeownership Month. Below is an excerpt from President Bush's proclamation setting aside the entire month of June as National Homeownership Month:

“Homeownership is an important part of the American Dream…A home provides shelter and a safe place where families can prosper and children can thrive. For many Americans, their home is an important financial investment, and it can be a source of great personal pride and an important part of community stability.”

“Homeownership encourages personal responsibility and the values necessary for strong families. Where homeownership flourishes, neighborhoods are more stable, residents are more civic-minded, schools are better, and crime rates decline.”

“During National Homeownership Month, I encourage all Americans to learn more about financial management and to explore homeownership opportunities in their communities. By taking this important step, individuals and families help safeguard their financial futures and contribute to the strength of our Nation.”

It's great there is a month supporting home ownership. I didn't know that. Of course I will work very hard to help as many people get into a home as I can.

Nina given the number of homeowners who have lost their home in the last 5-8 years, this is a day for those who have been able to keep their homes to truly celebrate.

Kathy Streib ~ homeownership to the extent we see it is truly an American cultural phenomenon; you just don't see it at these levels overseas.

Good morning, Joe Petrowsky. That is one thing I do love about first-time buyers--how excited and happy they are to become homeowners.

Conrad Allen ~ no question about it... people who own homes will typically work hard to maintain the integrity of their neighborhoods.

Yolanda, as far as I'm concerned we should be doing everything we can to promote responsible homeownership. It does improve our communities and our economy.

George Souto ~ you are right; but it's also a time to maybe celebrate that those who lost their homes through no real fault of their own can maybe come back to homeownership again now.

Debbie Laity ~ amazing isn't it that we've had Homeownership Month since 2002 and so many people, even in our industry, are not aware of it.

Home Ownership is w/in Reach. We Make it Happen!

Hi Nina: What a month to celebrate. Despite lack of confidence in our government and economy, home ownership should not remain as a mere American Dream. It should become a reality.

Sharing your blog on my facebook. I hope you don't mind.

Inna Ivchenko ~ you've hit the nail on the head, but I must admit I had not given any thought to likening it to a long term relationship.
