Where Did the Concept of Home Building Begin?

I have no idea how old I was when I built my first house, but I believe it started with Tinker Toys, Bricks, and Lincoln Logs.

Bricks was my favorite because it had windows and doors. For some reason, I loved the Lincoln Logs but a house without doors and windows, just wasn't a house to me. I loved to hear the sound of my plastic bricks click together and it helped me to draw better houses on paper including bricks, mortar, doors and windows. It wasn't until I became a little Tom boy in my black and white saddle shoes and playsuit with two long braids flopping around as I ran around and climbed higher up the trees, pushing long strands of hair away from my face as I built forts in the forest that I seriously started considering building my own real cool Log Cabin by the lake with blueberry and strawberry trails that led to steep mountains after I got married and had six kids who could help me build my log cabin. To be honest, I don't even think I cared who my husband was, just as long as I had six kids and six of their friends to help chop down the logs and carry my tools. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ + ♥♥♥♥♥♥

But then there were cards on rainy days. When I didn't have anyone to play with, I took the deck of cards and stacked them up to design my own village! That was always a great challenge until my dog wagged her tail and knocked down my house of cards and I had to start over again. My father always said, a dog teaches you responsibility. I say, a dog teaches a kid patience and they never blame you for anything! Yep it's true, a dog is a kids best friend and they never argue with you either plus they make the best garbage disposals when your mother tells you to eat everything on your plate and you don't like the food :)

The fact that I am an agent doesn't surprise me. What are my favorite smells in new construction?  It's the smell of fresh cut wood and good old fashioned dirt right after the rain. What do I like to see better than walking the floorplan in a model home?  It's those giant blue prints prepared by the architect. After the home is built, I enjoy looking out the windows and opening and closing the door. Plus I love to ring the doorbell!

I love doing what I do and I don't think I'd be in the business today if I didn't enjoy helping people find quality homes. A home is more than the foundation, roof, chimney, bricks, mortar, doors and windows, it's the celebration of a life time achievement!

Hi Patricia -- what a fun and memory-filled post with some wonderful comments.  It seems there are many AR members who have had a similar introduction to the real estate and building industry.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Patricia.  I loved your post and have never put our youth building efforts towards our present Realtor efforts together.  Though it makes perfect sense.

I remember playing with Lincoln Logs.  Even the smell of them.  And I loved playing in doll houses.  Even still, one of my favorite computer games is the Sims where I can make a house for a family and decorate it.

Being a farm kid I think my first building was a shabby fort built from sticks, boards, twine and other things that we could find to cobble together with simple tools and ingenuity.

That could have been me with the lincoln logs and tinker toys and legos and card houses. What fun. I have an urge now to go find something to build.

Saddle shoes and pigtails... you are speaking my language !!! If it didnt involve being outdoors and getting dirty I wasnt having fun !!! being a tom boy has alot of advantages-- and makes a woman capable of playing in a mans world with confidence and equality. I too enjoy home sites, scratch to closing. My favorite part of RE !!! nice post and walk down memory lane !

Good Morning Michele Connors - I loved your comments! In addition to the advantages you mentioned, it sure helps build confidence and character too! There's no greater sense of accomplishment than seeing the finished product knowing you did it! I'm feeling inspired to build something now! Enjoy your day

I know exactly what you mean Kat Palmiotti. It would be so much more interesting if we could use our hands for something more than just keystroke typing. Sometimes I feel I am so conformed to the administrative side of constant computer keystrokes, ipads, and cell phones that I forgot what it's like to feel the freedom of creativity and imagination.

Bob Crane - it must have been fun to live on a farm where independence forced kids to grow up in a responsible way. I can just picture that castle you built that some would call a shabby fort but to you, you were the Master of the Universe! Those were the days....

Good Morning Chris Ann Cleland - I have not heard of Sims but that sure sounds like a lot of fun!!! To think kids playing with building toys all over America were all doing the same things autonomously and having something to show for it when completed. Plus, what a great way spend alone. Imagination + Creation using all the senses is a skill that keeps building confidence, independence, fine motor skills, and learning. Putting pieces together and actually seeing the results is a positive way to spend the day plus a great sense of achievement! Thanks for sharing!

I spent way too many hours with the The Sims and their virtual world.  I had to stop. Video games can be wicked the way they suck you in.

It was a depression game people used to play.
