Experts Call Me, Too...

I read Chris Ann Cleland’s post Thank Goodness a Real Estate Expert Called me Yesterday.

And I thought to post about my real estate expert so that Chis Ann don’t think that she is the only one who gets this honor :)

A call was from Florida’s West Coast. A lady introduced herself and asked about Oceanside Inn.

Well, I can talk about it until you stop me or die, whichever happens first. But this time it was all rather quick.

She asked me how much the rental management company was taking, and when I explained that they take 10% of top for credit card and tour operators’ commission and split the rest, so they take 45%, she got agitated. The subtle unsettledness in her voice went into high pitch and she declared that she already knew where the problem was.

I tried to tell her that this was rather common split for condo-hotels in our area, but she interrupted me. No matter how I tried, I simply could not get past this point. In the meantime I was told that she is a guru, a mortgage broker and knows how to…

It quickly became very weird. If I kept quiet, she would calm down, but then ask me a question, and would not let me answer…

She asked me what was included in the maintenance fee. It was a good question. Better than what the rental company does to earn this money, as this is not under our control anyway.

- Except Taxes and liability insurance…

At which point she very sarcastically lectured me that I should be answering not what was not included, as this clearly was not what she was asking me about, but what was included, so she gave me a chance to improve, and I said

- well, except for taxes…

I wanted to say that except for taxes and insurance everything else WAS included, but she was yelling the moment I mumbled the first word.

She asked me what she was supposed to think of me, if I could not answer her simple questions, and I saw the light at the end of the tunnel

- Think of me as stupid and have a very nice day…

Have I hung up on a customer before?

Hi Jon - That was certainly a justified hang-up, a reaction I have displayed as well in the face of overwhelming faux expertise and impolite inquiry. I think we all get these regularly just to give our nervous systems a quick flush.

Practice makes perfect.

Soon the hang-ups will come faster and you'll be way ahead.
