While there are many rivalries (think Capulets and Montagues) and many curses (think Celie Johnson's curse on husband Albert in The Color Purple) this past weekend saw a new twist in legendary sports rivalry. Sports fans are probably well aware of both the rivalry and the curse...but not everyone is a sports fan so a little recap.
and
The story goes that in 1920 the Redsox sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees and brought upon themselves the "Curse of the Bambino" (insert spooky music here)! This curse is often cited as the reason for the 86 year drought that saw no World Series win for Boston. Red Sox Nation finally broke the curse in 2004 with their sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series!
But there is more...
Over the weekend news broke of another impending curse!!! Apparently a construction worker, who also happens to be a Red Sox fan, placed a Big Papi (a.k.a. David Ortiz) Boston Red Sox Jersey in the concrete of the currently under construction Yankee Stadium, as it was being poured! It seems that Gino Castignoli, the aforementioned Red Sox fan, got it into his head that he would curse the Yankees by placing the jersey! Another curse! This could not be allowed to stand! The reaction was swift (5 hours of jackhammering) and the offending jersey was removed! And so too was the curse!
Or was it (insert spooky music here)!

Did ya hear that the Yankees may go after the construction worker to pay for the work to get the jersey out of the concrete? No I do not believe in curses but, I guess some in baseball do. ;-)
Zen - Glad I could provide a short diversion to the daily workload!
Don - IMHO, that seems a little excessive! The worker certainly should not have placed the jersey. It seems that billing him for its removal to abide the "curse" believers is excessive. It would be one thing if the jersey's placement was cause for some structural concern but I seriously doubt that is the case. To me curses are fun bits of lore and shouldn't be permitted to be the proxy in the ruining of this worker's reputation or ability to provide for himself and his family. A bit of fun!
Anyone who knows you Rich knows you like Baseball!!! Love this post. I had to forward it to my grandfather in Michigan City, IN. He loves Babe Ruth and he is 80 and on the internet all the time ;) Thanks
LOL! So that's the story! I caught the tale end of the news when they were holding the shirt up. If he IS required to pay for the concrete removal the shirt will probably end up on Ebay!
Jim - It will be interesting to see! They are almost always a contender but that shirt...oooooooooh spooooky...
Christina - Glad you liked it and I hope your grandpa does too! You're right that I do love baseball! I can be found cheering for my beloved
Debbie - It is a funny story that adds to the legend of this rivalry! If the guy has to make restitution, he should at least get to sell the shirt to help pay for the it! I knew you would like this one!
Rich: Being a die-hard Yankee fan (my husband had his bachelor party at Yankee Stadium), I have only one question: How in the world did a Red Sox fan ever get cleared to work on Yankee Stadium? I could have told them something like this would happen...Just can't trust those Boston fans! (LOL)
Kim - You can't be a Yankees fan! You're too close to ATL to root for the Yankees! You know Debbie Malone is a huge Red Sox fan...better watch out! <<<smile>>>
Scott - That is for the Yankees comment! And the Selig comment!
