In Honor of D-Day- June 6 - 71 Years Ago
Instead of my usual Saturday- Delray Beach post, today’s honors those who fought on June 6, 1944 in what has become known as D-Day… when 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50 mile stretch of Normandy beach. More than 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded. If you would like a refresher, there is excellent information at the
National D-Day Memorial Site.
I’ve told this story before, but my dad served in World War II as a photographer in the Army Air Corps. As such, his “studio” was in a plane. His birthday is June 6, so on the day before D-Day. he asked his Captain if he could take the next day off as it was his birthday. His Captain said “Henry, trust me, you’re not going to want to miss this day.”
Needless to say, he flew.
"When pressure mounts and strain increases everyone begins to show the weaknesses in his makeup. It is up to the Commander to conceal his: above all to conceal doubt, fear, and distrust." General Dwight D Eisenhower
“Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them.”
Franklin D Roosevelt
“They fought together as brother-in-arms. They died together and now they sleep side by side. To them we have a solemn obligation.”
Admiral Chester W. Nimitz
Happy Birthday, Dad!!
Thank you to the Greatest Generation. May we honor your service.
