The Old Tallest and the New Tallest

Foshay Tower reflected in the IDS Tower glassbronze statue of Mary Tyler MooreThe photo at left was taken on a discovery tour of the canyons in downtown Minneapolis while looking for the Mary Tyler Moore statue mentioned by Maureen McCabe in a comment on my blog.  Despite many years in the Twin Cities area I didn't realize Mary Tyler Moore had a bronze statue in Minneapolis!  It was there.  See the picture on the right.  I had walked past it many times.  It was just another light post to me!

In touring downtown Minneapolis, I saw the Foshay Tower reflected in the IDS Tower and wondered if I could catch in on my camera.  It worked beautifully and so here, juxtaposed by reflection, stand the Foshay Tower, the tallest building in Minneapolis for many long years, reflected in the IDS Tower, the current tallest building in Minneapolis.  The irony makes me chuckle.

Bonnie - I LOVE these pictures!  What a great picture of the reflection of the other building - loved the wording 'canyons in downtown'.  That's exactly what it feels like in some towns.

Isn't it interesing how we don't really see what we see nearly every day?  Makes you want to stroll the streets and see things through the eyes of a tourist.

Bonnie, that photo of the buildings is awesome... good positioning and great idea!

I rarely watched the MTM show so I don't know the answer to this and thought you or others might...

The location of the statue - is that where she actually stood when she tossed her cap into the air?

Leanne, You'll have to ask Maureen McCabe if that's where she tossed her hat.  I didn't watch the show much either, just knew it was in Minneapolis.  The house is still there that they used for the film.  Back then our town was just considered a po-dunk hollow kind of place.

Ann, I've got to give the Codgers credit for the canyon analogy.  Check out their blog for the photo tour where they use that term.

Sarah, I have lots of pix that would make a winter tour of Minneapolis, but don't have the beautiful summer green ones.

Bonnie: Thanks for the link. "Canyons" is not really original to us, I've heard the term used to describe big-city downtowns for years, perhaps first in Chicago. I love your photo of the Foshay reflected in the IDS building.

Bonnie ~ great photos of your downtown.  You did a good job on the reflections for sure.  MTM is a TV legend, I forgot the show was done in your town.
