Overcrowded Taft High School Plans to Cap Attendence

By
Real Estate Agent with Brown Realty, 210-789-4216, TREC #0492321

Over the next two years, Taft High School in the Northside ISD plans to cap attendance. What this means is that any new students, who move into certain parts of the Taft attendance zone will be temporarily capped and moved to Brennan High School which still has some room, and is very close to Taft. Most students who live in and around the Alamo Ranch Community attend Taft High.

Taft High Red RaidersThis cap is necessary because next school year(2015-2016), Taft’s enrollment will be almost 3,100 students, and will continue to grow to about 3,500 students before the next high school opens to provide some relief. The Taft High School zone is the fastest growing area in the Northside ISD.

Approximately 150 to 200 new students in the Taft attendance zone will be affected each year for the next two years until the new and yet-to-be named, “Kallison Ranch Area” high school opens in the summer of 2017. All those students who are capped to Brennan will be provided bus transportation.  See Map for Capped Taft HS areas.

Brennan BearsThe cap will only affect students, who become new residents in the identified zones on or after June 5, 2015. Middle school students in the areas feeding Taft are eligible to attend Taft providing they are residents in these areas BEFORE June 5, 2015. Some students who moved into capped neighborhoods of Briscoe, Zachry, and Connally middle schools could be affected when they become freshmen.

To determine if your home address is impacted, go to Northside Boundaries and Buses, and enter your address.

Northside recently broke ground on the new “Kallison Ranch” high school which is located about five miles west of Taft High School off FM 471 W at the Medina Valley ISD boundary line. The Culebra Road(FM 471) corridor, as well as the Potranco Road corridor outside of Loop 1604 are both high growth areas. The New “Kallison Ranch” High School will become the District’s 11th comprehensive high school.

For more information contact the Resource Planning Office at 210-397-8588, or read the May 2015 issue of Inside Northside Lessons.

Yes, Brenda. There's rapid growth in the northwest area where this high school is located. Many are looking forward to the new high school opening in the next two years.

Great local information Jerry. We had this issue in the town of Queen Creek where the population exploaded and the schools couldn't handle the growth. They had to bus kids back in to my area's school district of Gilbert until they built a few new schools out there. It's better now.

Hi Nicole Doty - Gilbert Real Estate Expert The schools always seem to be the last things that get built to keep up with the population growth. But, at least the District has a plan to handle to overcrowded schools.

Thanks, Alan Kirkpatrick Yes, we're experiencing tremendous growth in the northwest areas of the city. More schools are needed to keep up with the population growth.

Hi Endre Barath, Jr. I believe those smaller class rooms, and smaller high schools give kids more quality time. You're fortunate to have attended one. Most of our public schools are becoming overcrowded these days.

We've had bountaries causing real problems in some areas if they are moved out of a high ranking school into a lower ranking school.

It affects market value dramatically.

Yes, Lenn. I can see that affecting your market values whenever the boundaries are changed. With all the rapid growth, we have come to expect such changes.

Jerry, sure sounds like they need to build some more schools, so not to have over crowding!

Yes, Endre Barath, Jr. We can't ever under value the benefits of those smaller classrooms. I think we fail to reach some students in those over crowded classes.

Yes, Joan Cox More new schools are already under construction in that area. It's a challenge for the schools to keep up with the rapid growth in the city.

Hello Jerry Newman

Great post!  Schools are a big issue and when maps are redrawn for attendance zones, things can get pretty intense with unhappy parents and students!
