ASK AN AMBASSADOR: ActiveRain Would Have Changed, With Or Without Zillow

Sometimes the road isn't totally smooth, but it gets us where we need to go.ASK AN AMBASSADOR:  ActiveRain Would Have Changed, With Or Without Zillow

#BlameItOnZillow

I wander the halls of ActiveRain and for many it seems that when anything is going wrong in the Rain, first take is that it must be the fault of Zillow.  It's because they bought ActiveRain, right??  They're CHANGING things, making it worse, etc.

Your points not adding up right?  #BlameItOnZillow.

Some of your favorite bloggers blogging less?  #BlameItOnZillow

Not getting as much Google Juice?  #BlameItOnZillow

You think the quality of posts has slipped?  #BlameItOnZillow.

And I don't buy it for a second.

Points MIA?  Shoot, that was going on long before Zillow ever made the scene.

Bloggers blogging less or quitting entirely?  It's been happening for years.  The bottom of my Subscribed to list is populated with bloggers that quit LONG before MarketLeader begat Trulia begat Zillow.  It's the nature of our industry.  Agents come and go.  Bloggers move to other sites, quit the business, etc.

Think the quality of posts is down?  Last I checked, no one tells us what to write or how to write it, so quality is solely in our control.  We don't HAVE to enter contests, we don't HAVE to write 20 posts in a week when we only have topics for 5 good ones.  We don't HAVE to look at the Feature board and get disturbed if we don't agree with what's there (or not there).  All this is in OUR control, no matter what company has ownership.

For us, the benefits of AR are still right there where it's always been.  We have a far greater web presence than pre-blogging days.  Our chances of getting a referral from another agent?  WAY better.  Knowledge level?  Also way up thanks to all the tips gained in the Rain.  And friends in the Rain?  Still plenty of them on a daily basis.

ActiveRain pre-Z and post-Z isn't any different from most small businesses.  How do we gain clients?  How do we keep them?  How do we improve?  True, the members might not always agree with what "improve" actually means, but since when have you ever seen 100,000 real estate agents agree on anything?  And have you ever truly believed the AR staff didn't have the best interests of the AR community in mind?  I can't say I've seen one iota of evidence to indicate they don't care.  Swamped and overloaded?  Now that I've seen!

The saying that change is the one constant in Life is true for ActiveRain too.  Stagnation in a volatile business is the beginning of the end.  We need to keep new members joining and engaged to guarantee the long term health of the community.  That would have been the challenge, with or without Zillow.

BLiz, If you are a consistent blogger, you have to ask yourself the question, Where would I be if it were not for ActiveRain?

Accurate post. Old adages are famous for a reason. This one is called "the more things change, the more they stay the same."

Nick, I've always viewed AR as a "benevolent dictatorship".  They do want what is best for the health of the overall community, but bottom line is as you say, it's a business and they have to do what they have to do to monetize that, or there will be no AR.  For the most part I think they get the changes right, but we could all live with a few less gremlins.

Michael, It's been a real bonus for us.  I'm closing another home tomorrow thanks to niche blogging.

Chuck, The only question is which people will be the same over time.  A fairly volatile membership, but that's the nature of the business.

Still here.  Still posting.  Still reading and commenting.  Still following folks.  Still feeding FB from AR.

Things change.

You're right ... changes occur all the time.  Good and bad, Liz and Bill Spear.  But I gently remind you that AR is not made up solely of agents.  There's many here representing other "arms" of the real estate industry too ...

Lenn, That they do!

Gene, No doubt plenty of other professions here, but I've yet to see any groups besides the SEO gurus and agents get in a tussle.  For some reason the mortgage folks know how to behave better than the rest :)

Liz and Bill Spear ~ where does the rubber meet the road? I don't really know the answer, but I can tell you implicitly I am not one for blame. The blame game isn't what's important to me nor will it ever. I think you know my feelings about Z so I don't have to go there, and my lack of participation here has nothing to do with the new ownership either. For me, the lack of participation is strictly on me, I haven't had the time as well as I sort of lost the fire I once had to post... Plain and simple "with the passion gone mixed with the lack of time I have on my hands to blog, my participation lacks here. And I can't blame Z for that

Jon, I knew you said right after the announcement you weren't going anywhere and glad you made that decision!  And I can relate to being swamped.  It's our peak season, and add in yardwork and the rest and my AR time is down.

Corinne, Changes comes with living.  It's too bad that some folks did leave due to the changes, because the core of what attracts me to this community is still here, even if the way things look may be a bit different.

There is one way for ActiveRain not to have changed.  Time stopped, the clocks froze.

And let's agree (don't shoot me) some of the #BlameItOnZillow changes, were actually (don't shoot me) good changes.

The one thing AR has to do is turn a profit. Not sure how well they have managed to do this over the years. Am I happy with the changes? For the most part, no. Do I think newbies will stick around during endless "updates"? Not on your life.

It will be interesting to see what Zillow does with AR over the next year or so.

Claude, No argument here, some of the changes have been good, especially the ones that help our SEO and encourage engagement.

Praful, The people are still here (at least most of them).

Doug, Agreed.  Every business needs to put $$ in the bank, and not sure how well AR has done with that over the years.  That said, there are a LOT of agents/stagers/inspectors/loan officers/etc., here, and there has to be some value to that many eyeballs.  The good news is the newbies aren't used to the old, so the changes may not impact them much unless the changes become disruptive to daily routine.

Real Estate Law From A Practical Perspective

If we really want to keep AR true to the original concept that many of us seem to keep going back to over and over again, why not sell off AR a new group of "investors" so that we can privatize it like a mutual company for the benefit of the members.  We'll get the mortgage folks and the lawyers to help us out with RESPA, but listings and other ads should cost money, sponsorships will help run the site (along with membership fees) and real estate education and cooperation will prevail!

Martin, I suspect most members will continue to accept AR in it's (mostly) free format, whatever that happens to be at the time.
