The osprey is Astor's mascot bird and you can see them flying overhead anytime. Astor FL and much of the land along the St. Johns River was inhabited by Timucua natives prior to settlement by Europeans.
In 1874 William Blackhouse Astor, Jr. from New York City's wealthy Astor family purchased over 12,000 acres of land, and established a town he called Manhattan. Settlers arrived by steamboat to the town Astor had built that now included a church, schoolhouse, botanical garden, and cemetery. Astor then built a hotel, saw mill, and eventually a railroad. John Jacob Astor IV inherited his father William's estate and continued to promote the town. Unfortunately John Jacob Astor IV died on the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912, and the estate then passed to his son Vincent. William Vincent Astor was not interested in his grandfather's Florida enterprise and so their interests were then sold. The decline in Steamboat travel further led to the severe decline of the St. Johns. As of the 2000 census, there were 1,487 people, 641 households, and 444 families residing there. (Wikipedia source)
