Despite our ideals of the 21st-century woman being more independent than ever, making more money than ever before and climbing the corporate ladder, many women still feel that certain life milestones need to come in a certain order -- marriage first, buying a home second.
Do you fit into this group? If so, what are you waiting for? What's holding you back? We want to know!
12 Comments on Women: What Are You Waiting For to Buy Your First Home?
Maura, I love the look of your Smart Successful Women blog. I've found many successful single women purchasing homes here in the D.C. area. Even moreso than single men, for one reason or another. Just another indication that women truly are smarter than men.
Hi, Brian! Thank you so much!! It's a brand-new division of our team that I've been working on and am really hoping it will take off - if only to educate my friends and family. I think it's an important thing to be educated about.
Thanks for the compliment and keep checking back for more! =)
Maura ~ Keep us posted. This is a great concept and I wish you much success with it! I featured it for our Women in Real Estate group. So, thank you for your contribution!
Hi, Sarah! Thank you for the feature - I appreciate the recognition! We're really hoping it turns out to be a successful program, and we plan to post updates to our AR blog as they happen!
I bought my first home all on my own. It was a condo. What a great feeling! I put myself first, wasn't worried about getting married first. If I had been, I don't think it would have ever happened. I truly believe that making that decision helped to be more confident, and ultimately, my best self. After living in that condo for three years I met, who is now, my husband.
Hi, Chris Ann! Thanks for reading and commenting, and for sharing your story.
I am reading a great book right now to review for our women's site called "Buying Solo: The Single Woman's Guide to Buying a First Home" by Vanessa Summers. She actually states owning a home as a way to work toward and be more attractive to a potential future spouse! =)
Maura: Great marketing concept! I found in Philadelphia more single women or single women head of households purchase than couples or single men combined.
Hi, Tara! Thank you so much! We're slowly-but-surely working out our marketing and our ideas for this project, and so far we've gotten a really great response!
Nice Concept - I am going to keep you bookmarked as I work with Singles in SoCal and if I have any moving towards Atlanta, I will keep you in mind. Check out my blog Real Estate Possibilities for Singles
Fantastic Blog set up; and awesome distinguishing "feature" I am with you 100% and am on various womens committees and chair various entities. Hoping you don't mind to create a "take off" on this topic.
Interestingly enough our RAR Association here in Rockford, IL (Rockford Area Realtors) just broke loose with a HUGE, multi-faceted campaign directed at FIRST TIME home buyers. The ad campaigns in written,tv and radio formats include both men and women; the interesting part is that there is ONE ad specifically geared to THE SINGLE WOMAN (and encouraging HER to STEP OUT and BUY) and one ad geared towards the male genre (focusing on the idea that MOM is TIRED OF DOING YOUR LAUNDRY, BUY A HOME!)
So, the idea has been layed out; I think it will be great to continue with a variety of campaigns, skits, advertising, etc highlighting the fantastic ability THE SINGLE WOMAN has in purchasing a home. Being a midwestern-er (born and raised) I do believe that the SINGLE WOMAN in the midwest "thinks" and is raised to succomb to different "rules as they were" with regard to INDEPENDENCE.
I cannot begin to tell you the teenage mentally in and around the counties I work in that succomb and promote: getting married and settled down right after high school; YIKES; something that took place in my youth. I thought we had emerged from these emotional bonds years ago? I am continually presented with arguments that tells me NO. Its very interesting.
I DO love your passion for this subject and I can FEEL the enthusiasm and energy in the design, color and format of this BLOG...BEST to you
Having started investing in real estate at an early age, I relate well to single women looking to buy their first properties, whether a condo or a single family home. A large percentage of my clients over the years have been single women--guess they found a kindred soul when they met me. Such a great feeling to help them on their way to yet another form of independence.
