Celestial Cinema at the Maui Film Festival in Wailea
This year was the 16th annual Maui Film Festival which is held in Wailea and Kahului. One of the highlights of the event is the Celestial Cinema which is an outdoor venue on the golf course in Wailea. You can bring your beach chairs or a blanket and sit under the stars to watch a new film on the big screen.
Here we are getting settled about an hour before the film starts. Just find a place to sit and get comfortable. It's very well organized by Barry and Stella Rivers.
On Sunday we went to see my niece being honored in a documentary about her... The Wave I Ride - Paige Alms' Story. Paige is a young woman who grew up on Maui and learned to surf as a kid, and really excelled at the sport. The film covers her life for about a year, riding the big waves here on Maui and also on the mainland. As a female big wave surfer she is really charging and leading the way for the next generation.
Once it got dark we were introduced to Laura Dern who was receiving a Rainmaker Award at this year's festival. She was very cool and sat for an interview before the main feature. Then Paige and the director came out and talked about her documentary before it aired for the first time ever. It was pretty awesome to see the film and the audience reaction to it. I am really proud of her for being so focused and determined to achieve her goals. She is an inspiration to many.
I totally recommend going to see the Celestial Cinema if you're on Maui during the summer. It usually lasts about 5 days, with many great films being shown for the first time, in a variety of locations. The starry night sky and the outdoor setting really makes for a good night.
