...and neither should your blog or website.

Many, many years ago a male friend made a comment to me that made me stop watching daytime soap operas. At the time he was a pharmacy student and I was a very young (recently separated) single mom of two. He said that watching so operas was total waste of time and that people (like me) could be doing something a lot more productive with their time. Although I could have, I didn't take it as an insult. I saw some truth in those words and I stopped watching soap operas and spent more time studying and doing homework.

Fast forward about 15 or 16 years...Back in January of this year I was browsing the All My Children website to see if I could pinpoint a time frame for when Angelique Voynitzeva-Marick was on the show. I named my middle child Angelique as a result of this person being on the show. Well, while I was browsing the website I noticed that Angie and Jesse were coming back to AMC mid-January. Jesse was coming back from the dead after 20 years! This was exciting and I told anyone who would listen.

I planned to watch the show just long enough to see the reunion of Angie and Jesse. That finally happened in February (I think). Every week I say I am not going to watch it anymore and then Friday comes. Any of you who have ever watched the soaps know about cliffhanger Fridays. So, it's been almost three months. My nine year old is hooked and so is someone else. I can't say his name or he'll choke me. But my nine year old calls him "daddy." We race home to see the recorded episodes and get upset if anyone tries to even hint at what happened.

All My Children has been on as long as I've been alive. It actually debutted the year I was born. Although it's lost some viewers there has to be something that keeps people coming back. There has to be a reason it's been on the air 38 years. (Lordy, lordy someone's almost 40.)

Soap operas were not meant to be watched as single episodes. They were created to keep people coming back. And, so it should be with our websites and our blogs. I learned that here on Active Rain. I've taken the time to create a really great real estate website, an awesome neighborhood website, and a blog presence on ActiveRain. However, I haven't done much to keep visitors and clients coming back. There are no cliffhangers or storylines.

Our websites and blogs should be intriguing and captivating. There should be an ever unfolding plot or theme. I keep saying that I am going to start doing everything I need to do next week. So, I'll add this to my list:

I'll update my content and post to my blog so that All My Children Clients (and prospects) can see the Bold & the Beautiful properties available on the market. I'll optimize my sites so that Google and Yahoo can shine the Guiding Light for the Young & the Restless who are looking for that One Life Place to Live. I'll target my Passions for real estate to stay abreast As the World Market Turns.

Note: I have intentionally omitted graphics from this post because TLW's featured post has me scared senseless about finding a FedEx envelope in my driveway.

What a great post!  Funny, interesting, and full of helpful information!  Thanks!

Barbara, this post may be funny but my addiction certainly isn't. LOL! I really will stop watching...really. :-) The time I spend watching AMC late at night could be spent on my websites. LOL! Thanks for stopping by.

Hi, Toni.  I've been an off-and-on General Hospital viewer for many years.  It's a great way to disengage  your brain and unwind.  It's free and it's not hurting anybody.

I've learned a lot from my soap.  Don't believe a dead person is really dead even if they find the body.  Any lie WILL come back and bite you.  If two people who aren't supposed to be together get together in a moment of weakness, a pregnancy WILL result.  And, most importantly, NEVER GET BOTOXED.  The older women on the show have faces that don't move.  It's creepy.

OMG Karen! That is hilarious. When I started watching AMC again I couldn't believe all those people were still on the show. Talk about job security! It has been a great way to unwind at the end of a very long day.

Great analogy, I'm going to think of my blog as a soap opera from now on. What day should be my cliffhanger day?

My husband used to give me flak for watching my soaps. I've whittled it down to one and I thank the techno gods for DVR so I don't have to listen to him about it anymore.

Toni, what a great idea.  I was shaking my head, "YES" as read this post!!!  Of course, it's suppose to be like a soap opera -- an ongoing story line.  A cliff hanger from time to time to keep them coming back.  Thank you for sharing this with us!

I was hopelessly addicted to Days of our Lives forever.  Haven't seen it in a very long time -- probably time to catch up with it.  Maybe tomorrow!?!

JoEllen, I won't be getting any flak from my husband...not that he watches too. <wink> But DVR is a great life saver. Otherwise I'd be home for lunch everyday. I think Friday is a good cliffhanger day. It gives you all weekend to come up with interesting content. :-)

Judi, JUST SAY NOOOO! Don't even think about "catching up!" You'll never get away I tell you. I've been off the soaps for years and all I wanted to do was see the reunion. Now, look at us...I mean me. :-O As for the website and blogs I need to really work on this myself. Someone who is REALLY good at this is Jessica Horton. I imagine that while she was on blogging hiatus some Rainers and her clients had serious withdrawal symptoms. LOL!

Toni, I got hooked when my baby was born, 36 years ago. I used to be a closet AMC watcher. I had a radio with a TV band to listen while in my studio. Now Tivo allows me to have access no matter what my schedule. Erica just went into "solitary"

I admire how you related AMC to Active Rain and Real Estate.

Margaret, I can't believe I'm hooked again. The whole Erica storyline is a riot to me. Even with the complaints about the AMC writers they still manage to keep us coming back. One day I will find time to beef up my website and blog. I was under the illusion that I would have a lot more free time when I quit my job. I have never worked such long hours, even as an accountant. Funny thing is I never get tired though because I love what I do.

Nice post, Toni. And you're right, we should change our Websites so that people will want to come back.

Darleen, thanks for stopping by. We could probably learn a lesson or two from some of the power bloggers here. By the way, I am laughing really hard at one of the testimonials on your profile. I am sure you know which one. It's great, but still funny to me. ROFL!
