A Forest Begins; Throwback Thursday

These photos take me back a little over twenty years ago on a day when some old friends Marv and Mary Bloedow came over for a visit and toured our recently planted forest.

The kids were young, Josh was 5, Amy was 3, Nick was just 2, and so were the trees that are hiding in the grass that we are walking through.

Two years before these photos were taken, we had purchased this old worn out rocky farm and used money that we could ill afford to spend to plant a third of my 118 acres to a new forest.

I remember telling my co-planters Pat Kamin and Gene Hakes that they should be proud of themselves for this week we were starting something great and before long a forest would be filling this old field, no longer would you be able to see a half mile back to the house for trees would be blessing our view.

Now the trees are over 30 feet tall, the view has been obscured for about 15 years, and I marvel at the beauty of this forest whenever I visit this old farm.

This year we are planning to do the first of many thinnings on this forest, which with proper planning should be yielding periodic thinnings every 10 years forever.

Isn't it amazing to see how nature takes hold and runs with it? And you will have a long future of seeing how this forest just keeps giving back.

Bob, just amazing how fast a bare field can turn back to a forest.  When you thin the forest do you sell off the pine for pulp wood?

Hi Bob, Thin k how much work was done turning the original forest into a field. Now you have reversed all that. Thinning every 10 years? Does this make a profit or just cover costs?
