Here's a solution for two problems at the same time.

  • The Newbie's Complaint - "What does it take to get my post Featured on ActiveRain?" (thanks for the idea Kelli)
  • The Old Timer's Complaint - "Most of what gets posted on ActiveRain is junk! Where the heck are the good articles?"

Let's solve both issues at the same time. This is not an official ActiveRain sponsored event. But that doesn't matter. ActiveRain is a member driven site, and I'm a member. So, I'm taking some initiative here. Hope the AR guys don't mind too much.

Writing the winning post!Newbies (or not):

If you want to get noticed on ActiveRain, you need to get Featured. Featured articles are read by hundreds of members. If an article gets Featured and it's good, members tend to either bookmark the article, add you to their associates list or subscribe to your blog. After that, they come back to your blog looking for more good articles and it gets easier to be noticed. The hardest part, obviously, is to get noticed the first time!

Here's your chance. In this contest, points don't mean squat. Everyone has an equal chance.

Old Timers (in internet time):

There has been a whole bunch of complaining going on about the falling quality of articles on ActiveRain. It's time to try to change that. I read almost all of what gets posted in the 'Rain. Crazy but true. And, I tend to agree that currently, the percentage of quality articles is dismally low. Part of the reason it is so low is that many of the old timers aren't posting anything good! So here's a call to action. How about posting up something that raises the bar? You've done it before. You must have at least one more good article in you.

The Rules (yeah I know, but we need some)

  • Must be written between Feb 18,2007 and Feb 24,2007.
  • If it's not fresh it will get cut. Let's get some new articles to read. If you want to rewrite an old article, go for it. But don't submit anything you have posted here on ActiveRain or on your outside platforms.
  • No Cut and Paste. (I hope I don't need to explain that.)
  • Copyscape (if it doesn't pass the Copyscape test, it's out, I detest plagiarism)
  • Late entries (will not be accepted. No exceptions. The cutoff is midnight Feb 24, 2007)
  • Sign up (you must be signed up to play, leave a comment here for now, I'll have something better soon)
  • I have just added a new Group called "Prime Time" (all contestants need to become members and your article needs to be added to the Group)
  • Maximum of 2 articles per contestant

Criteria

  • Unique ( a brand new article)
  • Minimum 300 words (I don't believe you can write quality in less than 300)
  • Grammar (if you have trouble with this, get someone to proof read your article)
  • Spelling (your blog has a spell checker, use it)
  • Tone (if the article is positive and upbeat, it gets a more favorable rating)
  • Subject (any! Write what you know about or what you feel passionate about)
  • Aesthetics (attractive layout and graphics will get a more favorable rating, it takes more effort to make it pretty)

The Prizes

A contest is no fun without prizes. So, here's what will happen to the winning articles. There will be a first, second and third place winner.

  • Winning articles will get Featured. Third place will get featured on Tuesday the 27th. Second place will get featured on Wednesday the 28th. And First Place will be featured on Thursday March 1st. How can I be sure they will get featured? Simple, I'll get my cohort Rich J, we'll drive to Seattle and refuse to leave until the posts get featured! Sounds a little crazy, but you know it will work. In reality, that won't have to happen. Matt, Caleb and Jonathan are very responsive to this network and the members of it. All three of them have written some very good articles. They must get tired of reading the lame posts too.
  • Points - We like to get them or complain about not having them. ActiveRain runs on points so let's give some away. I propose 1000 points for 1st Place, 750 points for 2nd Place and 600 points for 3rd Place. I need to get the nod from an AR guy on this. I have no authority or ability to give away points. Can we get the stamp of approval on this from somebody in ActiveRain?
  • Your article will get featured on SoundBiteBlog.com. This is not as big a deal as being featured on AR, but SoundBiteBlog does have a respectable readership and it can't hurt can it? It will also help with your internet exposure. A backlink from SoundBiteBlog to your profile or ActiveRain blog is a good thing.
  • The winning articles are bound to make it into the Week In Review on Monday the 5th! So you will get acknowledged one more time!

NetworkingSummary

Sometimes it takes aggressive action to affect positive changes. That is what this contest is all about. This contest could fall flat on it's face unless you (yes you) do something. Write an article. Help someone else to proofread their article. Tell your ActiveRain buddies about this contest and get them involved. But do something. Nobody loses and everybody wins. THAT is positive action. This network has over 16,000 members! If only 1% of the people submit an article, we'll have a great contest and many read-worthy articles.

If you decide to do nothing, you have no right to complain about the network! Do something with this! Get involved! Get somebody else involved! Here's an opportunity for everyone. It doesn't matter if you are new or have been here a while. This network is a collection of members. If the members do nothing, the network goes nowhere. If this contest fizzles, we will have nobody to blame but ourselves.

Notes

I will recuse myself from this contest for obvious reasons. After some thought, Rich Jacobson is also eliminated (sorry Rich). As many of you know, Rich is "Sparky" on SoundBiteBlog.com.

No copy and paste?  I write my blogs in Word and paste them in AR.  I need the spell and grammar check.  I type lousy and depend on the extra tools.

Sounds like a great idea, Mark.  I like that you are as "easier to apologize than to get permission" kind of person.  (Like me!)  I bet you'll receive those points you're wanting to hand out, the AR gods seem friendly.  I'll see if I can do anything worthy in the next week.  Nice to have a challenge!

2007

I am coming in late to this and haven't read all of the comments yet so if I missed something let me know.

Mark, I love competitions and I think this is a great idea! AR officially approves of the proposed bonus points prize. If it is okay with you I would also like to sweeten the pot a bit.

Additional Points: If any of the posts that are a part of this competition get blogged about and linked to from any of the following sources, then AR will give those members who authored the post an additional 500 points per mention and link, per source. Maximum points any member can receive from this portion of the competition is 2,000 points, and we may limit the total points given through this portion of the competition to 10,000 points.  List of sources to get links from: Sellsius Blog, Rain City Guide, Zillow Blog, Redfin Blog, Inman Blog or news, BusinessWeek RE Blog, Future of Real Estate Marketing, any major market newspaper blog, any of the top 100 popular blogs on technorati, Seth Godin's Blog, Freakonomics Blog, The Real Estate Tomato, ZipRealty Blog. (If you are an author on one of the mentioned blogs, a mention and link to your own AR featured blog post will not be counted.) To ensure that these bonus points are credited to you, please email me the link to the post that mentions your post. Please only email me if you were the author of the post that was featured!

On a related note, good blog posts require good blog fodder (defined as "an interesting idea, story, or link. Referred to as blog fodder when your first reaction is to use it in your blog." see Urban Dictionary.), so I am going to start sending interesting books to interesting ActiveRain bloggers. Now to be clear, we are not giving these books away. We expect that once you finish reading the book you will either send it back to ActiveRain, or preferably pass it onto an associate who will commit to sending it back to ActiveRain when they are finished reading it or find someone else who will commit to the same set of rules they did, etc, etc.

This week I will be sending out approximately 25 books to ActiveRainers. I will decide who will get the first batch by looking to the authors of the featured posts. So if in the next couple of days you write a post that is selected as a featured post and you would like to receive any of the books listed below, name which book you want in the comments section of your featured post, and make sure your address is correct in your profile, and check your mail because you may be one of the 25 Rainers to get a book. The list of books to choose from: Smart Mobs, Purple Cow, Wikinomics, Cluetrain Manifesto, Naked Conversations, The Long Tail. If you are having trouble deciding which book you want, then write the The First Place Winning post and I will send you all six of them!

(This book section was inspired by this contest but will be featured separately as a post that I will write within the next 24 hour period on my own blog.)

WOW is right! We now have Offical ActiveRain Approval on the Points Awards! (sometimes things work out well when the inmates take over the asylum!)

Now let me get some questions answered:

Tony M: It's not too late to sign up. Articles can be submitted all week long.

Jason P: Sames as Tony and no the articles DO NOT have to have been Featured to win this contest.

Marc B (from way up top): LOL. I hadn't thought of that! I'm sure you can come up with a better subject. Let's keep this contest on Real Estate related subjects.

Maybe I missed in in the rules or the 100 or so other comments in here. Are we limited to one submission each or can we submit more than one article for consideration? Whatever the answer, it mght be a good idea to add it to the rules.

I am finding that writing for a purpose, as in contest, has lead to challenges not forseen during sign up. Is anyone else having trouble coming up with a topic that they "personally" feel worthy of submitting?

So...Tomato is a fruit...the question is finally answered :)

I have enough featured articles, but I'd be happy to help with the judging.  Pick my favorite at least.  I'm in L.A. this week through the 25th, but just got in and appear to be "hooked up" OK.  Let me know.  Of course I'm going to pick the less syrupy more feisty one.  I say let ten different people pick their top ten, then the duplicates will truly be the best by concensus.

Ines: And I like week-kneed women! LOL Glad you're going to join us (maybe I should beg more often)

David: Does your comment mean you want to join up?

Chris B: Good question. Let's limit it to two. The contest is only for 1 week. I'll add it to the rules. thx

Toby: Rather than trying to find a subject to fit the contest, make the contest fit your subject! What has you fascinated right now? What has you excited? What has you curious? Write about something that is really interesting to you right now. Do you see what I mean? If it's something that interests you, the article will just naturally come out interesting (at least I think so).

Ardell: Thanks for the offer and I just may have to take you up on it. But, there won't be 10 judges. And the judging won't be about picking a favorite. I am hoping to get the contestants to improve the overall quality of the posts here on the network. That's why the criteria includes, composition, grammar, spelling and a minimum of 300 words. I've read many of your articles. They are good. Good subjects, good development of the theme, you use graphics that emphasize the subject of the article, you obviously use the spell checker and probably the grammar checker. So, your articles look professional.

That is what I'm hoping this contest will do; improve the quality of the posts.

The subject does not matter at all to me. If an article is controversial in nature; that's fine. If it's feel-good in nature; that's fine as well. The winner will be the more well-written of the two.

I'll let you know soon.

Well I don't agree with the basis of your discontent and judging at all.  So if you don't need me, leave me out.  I am particularly aware of the need to overlook those things and look at the content, particularly when someone's first language is not English.

I don't care about the Ps and Qs and dotted I and crossed T...I want to hear what someone has to say, not how they say it, or how polished a manner they have.  I find great wisdom on those who have less than polished skills.  Better for me is all about content and message.

Ardell you seem to be misunderstanding the basis of my discontent.

The winning articles in the contest will not be the spelling champions.

The winning articles will be those with well-developed content on a real estate related topic, whose authors have taken the additional time and effort necessary to check the spelling and grammar.

It won't surprise me at all if the winning articles have some errors in the grammar. I probably won't notice any but the most obvious. No, I wasn't a teacher in a former life :). I struggle with grammar and use my spell-checker all the time. I have found that more people respond more favorably to the articles I have taken the time to tidy up.

I do believe that, given two articles on the same subject that are equal in the subject development, the article that is grammatically correct and has no spelling errors, has a higher perceived value. I believe that ActiveRain has become very visible and will continue to become more visible. I believe clients want to feel they are in the hands of a professional. And, that leads me to believe that if the first impression a client gets of an ActiveRain member is through that members' writing, then naturally, improving the quality of posts on ActiveRain, will increase the members' chances of being viewed as an authority. Credibility is a combination of factors.

The more ActiveRain is viewed as an online authority source, the more the members will be viewed as authorities in their profession. This should lead to additional business for the members.

I am confused at this point whether you are offering help or withdrawing your offer because you disagree with my 'basis of discontent'. Would you be kind enough to clarify that for me?

Mark,

I like Stream of Consciousness blogging better than "newspaper article" style.  I want to see someone's blog voice, and so I like them to write as they speak.

You are a "plain vanilla" guy, and I think your vantage point offends me at some level, as many first generation Americans have much to offer in our business, but lack the skills to "appear professional" given the standards you set as "professional behavior".

I prefer caring people with something to say, in their own way, who I deem to be more professional than simply "polished" types.  I have a different definition of professional that embraces our growing diversity.  Nothing riles me up more than someone pretending that professional equals well spoken and grammatically correct.  Not that I don't have the skills, I do.  But I do not penalize those who don't, nor do I deem those who can write proficiently as being "more professional" than those who can't.

For blogging to be a meaningful activity, people need to be free to write as they speak.  Otherwise the "ad" doesn't match what is being advertised, the person behind the blog.

Blog Voice = Speaking as you would speak to someone if they were physically in your presence, whatever that may be.

I agree with everything you have said except the "plain vanilla" part. You have never taken the time to know me so your assessment has little merit.

I appreciate the fact the you have finally admitted that I offend you for some reason.

The difference between us is that I maintain an open mind about you.

I agree with your definition of "blog voice". I am an articulate man by choice. I won't 'dumb it down' for anyone. In my experience, that offends people.

I have greeted many new ActiveRain members. I greeted you as well. To date, you are the only person to completely snub my greeting.
