Hiking the Luna Whitedeer, bringing back Memories of my Early Days
Thirty one years ago in my first year in the US Forest Service, I was in charge of a Youth Conservation Corps crew and our main accomplishment for the summer was to construct the Luna Whitedeer trail in the Nicolet National forest.
At the time it was a tremendous amount of sweat and toil scratching this 4 mile trail out to the dense tree roots of Northern Wisconsin, but it all seemed worth it when I was doing a project near here with my youngest son Nick, and we took a few hours to see if the trail was still there after so many years.
It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining and the trail was still there despite many other things changing in the forest over the past three decades.
The trail is still there and being maintained and Nick and I had a great non work type hike.
