Six Savvy Safety Tips for Realtors

The secret to happiness is freedom… and the secret to freedom is courage. ~Thucydides

For many who choose the Real Estate industry as their profession it is for the freedom they desire/need in their lives. Freedom to do what we enjoy does bring us happiness and reduce stress. At the same time, we need the courage to achieve true freedom; freedom from fear and the inherent risks that come with the industry.

I Am Xena is dedicated to equipping and empowering you so you may better protect yourself and your loved ones. I hope you will take the following Savvy Safety Tips to heart and find a greater freedom. “We gain strength, courage and confidence by each experience in which we really stops to look fear in the face… we must do that which we think we cannot.” Elenor Roosevelt

While there are precautions for all realtors, some realtors have the liberty and safety net of a public office, use it fully and reduce risks. Others, work out of your home and will need to utilize other options for ensuring your safety.

*Keep a healthy level of mistrust and wariness along with a savvy approach to safety.

*Let someone know where you are at all times. Be sure they know your car make, model and plate number.

*Download and use a Personal Safety App. Many are free or have free options. Whether free or paid, it is worth the investment. A few I am familiar with: bSafe, Life360, WatchOverMe.

*Use a prospect ID Form & Verify. Plan for and insist on meeting at the office and completing before showing property. Option: meet at coffee shop, not a bar, and complete documentation. Consider using your phone to snap a pic of the client witht their vehicle, include the licensce plate. This can be considered more acceptable by the client than taking a photo of their ID. Either way, do record all information from the ID and then verify BEFORE showing. Inconvenient? Can be. Time delays? Probably. Safest option? Yes! And bottom line: you coming home each is day is most important. The more unified the industry becomes on this matter, the more understanding and accepting the clients will become. (-average of 71 work related deaths a year form 2008-2011. www.bls.gov/iag/tgs/iag53.htm)

*Know Your Surroundings: Drive around the area, look for safety concerns, get the crime report for the area, know the exits of the property.

* Take a reality based self defense course and refresh at least once a year.

As a real estate licensee, you put yourself in danger every time you give a stranger a ride in your car, or meet a stranger at an empty house. Practice the following guidelines to minimize risks to your safety:

  • Ask callers to meet you in your office or a public place prior to showing them a house or meeting them at a house. If something about them seems off, don’t meet them alone.
  • Check the strength of your cell phone signal in the house you are going to show before it opens.
  • Carry an extra, fully charged cell phone battery.
  • Program emergency numbers to speed dial.
  • Keep your cell phone and car keys handy at all times.
  • Lock your handbag in your car trunk.
  • Ask the local police to place a squad car on patrol in the neighborhood during your open-house hours.
  • Establish multiple “escape” routes before the open house begins.
  • Guarantee that you can escape the backyard.
  • Release all deadbolts and locks.
  • Open all curtains and turn on all lights.
