What Not to Wear

By
Real Estate Agent with Online Real Estate Agent Training

What Not to WearAs we enter into the warmer climates it's probably a good idea to remind real estate agents that no matter how much the temperatures may rise, you still must dress appropriately.  If you want to be considered a professional, than you must dress like one.

There Will Be Exceptions

We all have a rationale as to why we dress the way we do, so before launching into the "why", please know that I understand completely that there will be exceptions to the "dress like a professional" rule.   While attending a home inspection it is not required that you wear your best slacks or heels.  In super warm climates the "dress code" can be a bit more relaxed; that's to be understood, but those should be the exceptions and not the rule.

People Do Judge You

As much as you may think it's unfair, people will judge you based on what you are wearing.  We all know that you should not judge a book by its' cover, but it's done all the time.  Many of us are even guilty of it.  If someone walks into your office to make what is probably the largest purchase of their life, do you really think they want to see a real estate agent walk out to greet them in shorts and flip flops?  I don't think so.  When you are in the office, on desk duty or meeting clients for the first time you should be dressed appropriately.   You don't have to wear a suit, but it does mean that slacks, a collared shirt or blouse, a polo shirt, hard shoes are appropriate.  Also, the Summer is a great time for all of us to get in shape...that's a good thing.  But it isn't a good idea to show off your new shape with clothes that are too tight, save that for your private time at home.

You Can Change It Up

Once you have met with the client a few times you may want to mirror their style of dress; meaning if they are super casual, than you can be casual (notice I didn't say you can be "super casual").  If they are more formal, then you need to dress more formally as well.  It's fine to change things up a bit after that first meeting, but try to dress slightly above your client.

The Power Of Looking Good

The bottom line is this, when you look good, you feel good.  When you look good, you carry yourself differently.  When you look good you don't have an issue running off to an unexpected showing. When you look good, you are ready to conduct business, without hesitation.  You always want to be ready when opportunity knocks.

Great thought....I always try to look my best everytime I am out in public, even when I am not doing my real estate business because you never know who you might run up on.  Thanks for sharing!

Granted it is pretty hot and humid down here so wearing a full suit is beyond miserable. But some agents look like they're going to the beach for the day or worse yet--they look like they are going to clean their house!
