Why Neighborhood Watch?
One of the easiest steps we all can take toward keeping the Kentlands a safe and relatively crime free neighborhood is to stay informed and connected. That is why Neighborhood Watch is important. We aren't talking about weekly meetings and citizen patrols. But we are talking about residents stepping forward and volunteering to stay informed and aware through receiving email alerts and committing to provide our local police with the information they need to properly allocate resources in our area.

The vast majority of crime in our neighborhood is "crime of opportunity" or "nuisance crime" such as vandalism, graffiti, or items stolen from unlocked cars and open garages. The Kentlands Neighborhood Watch program is designed to keep the conversation about these types of events open and on-going and to encourage residents to keep an open dialog with the local police - a neighborhood that talks and a neighborhood that reports is not a desirable target.

The most basic step any of us can take is to register for the Kentlands Watch List Serve accessible from the Neighborhood Watch option under the "Our Community" drop-down menu located on the kentlandsusa.com website. Registering only takes 3 minutes of your time. The List Serve has multiple levels of involvement and provides everyone the ability to quickly and easily share information and discuss community issues. Any resident interested in ONLY receiving email alerts from the List Serve moderators (i.e., specific information concerning safety or crime) has the option of doing so by selecting "Edit Membership" located in the Menu Bar at the top of the List Serve's homepage. Here, users can tell the List Serve to email them (A) every posting, (B) a "daily digest" or summarization of a day's postings, or (C) ONLY alerts or important safety messages from the Neighborhood Watch Moderators.

Secondarily, I urge everyone to take a moment and review the other information provided on the Neighborhood Watch's menu options located on the right side of this page. Here you will find detailed information about the police department's phone numbers, reporting graffiti, and the Kentland's Open Garage Door Program, in addition safety tips compiled from multiple sources, important websites, and email addresses for providing crime tips or information.

Finally, we all need to consider the value of keeping the police informed - even when considering crimes or incidents that may appear minor (e.g., a minor car break-in). Reporting crime - even the relatively mundane crimes - helps the police understand trends and allows them to properly allocate resources. Anyone with any questions, concerns, or tips can contact the Kentlands Neighborhood Watch or may correspond with Sergeant Rudy Wagner, Community Services Officer at the Gaithersburg Police Department, at rwagner@gaithersburgmd.gov (301-258-6400).
