Yes There Was A Water Leak

Inside The Ceiling Area

The leak was sudden but the cause happened over a year ago. When this leak was detected the resident could hear the water hissing in the included area. Water was flowing into the unit in no time and something needed to be done. The water was shut off.

In opening the walls and ceiling, removing the insulation, and running the drying fans, there was time to get started on looking at the source of the problem. It was the strangest thing, a nail had been shot through the copper pipe. That's not the strange part.

The nail in the copper pipe had been shot through the copper pipe over a year ago. It was a clear piercing and no water was leaking at first, then the nail started to rust over time. When the rust got bad enough water started flowing through and created a big mess.

Of course the pipe was repaired and the walls rebuilt. The little hole did quite a bit of water damage in a short period of time once it started.

It doesn't take much for a leak to start - whoever put that nail in probably didn't look behind the wood to see what they were nailing into.  Oops.

Tom, Well at least they didn't cut through the pipe with a reciprocating saw while gutting a bathroom.  I don't know WHO did that, nope, pleading the 5th.....

There were two other location last year where the nail was 30 years old before it failed in the same way Sheila Anderson . That was amazing to see!

Tom, The sound of gushing water was NOT a good feeling!  Fortunately the basement was unfinished, so the water was just landing on the concrete floor.  Cut the main and found out just how long it takes the remaining water to flow out of the pipe!  Lesson learned :)

Good morning Tom. How often we see things like this happen, you really need to pay attention to what inside the walls before you start pounding nails.

Oh the dreaded nail through the pipe scenerio!

We had a couple of leaks on our boat this weekend. Took some real detective work on my husband's part, but he got to the bottom of both of them and fingers crossed they are all fixed.

He actually taped his cell phone to an old windshield wiper and turned the video camera on and then stretched his arm through the access panel and shot a little movie to have eyes on the situation. Worked great!

Last week I had a hot water leak in a copper pipe under my pier and beam house, as a result of earthquake vibrations causing the copper pipe to rub against a joist.
