Throwback Thursday-Hiking in the Sierra Nevadas

By
Real Estate Agent with Compass CA DRE# 01215160

Now that summer is in full swing, many people head to the Sierra Nevada mountains for weekends--or weeks--of high altitude adventure.

This Throwback Thursday picture dates back to around 1990 or so, when Gene (5th from left) and I (pink cap) led a group of our Sierra Club hiking friends on a hike along the Pacific Crest Trail from Donner Summit to Squaw Valley - a long, rugged, spectacular, memorable hike!

In the background you can see snow on north-facing slopes and bowls; this year is different with virtually no snow pack remaining.

Happy memories with good friends.

Hi Sam Shueh - but hiking along the Sierra Crest in summer is delightful - barring the occasional afternoon thunder storm.

Kevin J. May - we were a group of 10 who knew each other, and our abilities, well. It was a wonderful day, a standout memory. Have you hiked in the Sierra near Lake Tahoe? Sounds like something you'd enjoy.

Kristin Johnston, Waukesha Realtor 414-254-6647 - I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for stopping by.

Good Morning Lottie,

Hiking along the Sierra Crest that summer must have been one of the many highlights in your life. I wish now that I would have hiked more scenic trails on the Appalachians back in the late 1980's and early 1990's. I've hiked in the Grand Canyon in AZ too; although beautiful, I preferred the Appalachian Mountains. I did visit San Mateo once and remembered thinking to myself how grand those mountains are. There wasn't time to hike but I really wanted to! The views on the Pacific Coast were a thrill to see from a car drive view. However, nothing else can compare to getting inside those hiking boots and climbing up and down mountain trails and to proudly say, "I did it!"

I wish I could have been among those fun people with you on the day that photo was taken. It's a great picture and I know it must drum up lots of extraordinary memories!

Looks like you all had a wonderful time. It's too hot to hike here this week, but Fall is my favorite time of the year and "hiking season."

Lottie, this makes me think of so many things...Donner Summit (the famous Donners who got caught in many snow storms and died and got eaten?? same ones??), the Pacific Crest Trail--the book Wild--that I loved so much that was recently made into a movie with Reese Witherspoon AND the Sierra Club that I believe Joanna Cohlan's husband, George heads up in NY! See this brought up lots of STUFF--oh, memories!

Patricia Feager, MBA, GRI, Cert Negotiations Expert, Military Relo Prof - how nice to know we have another hiker in our midst! San Mateo County and the entire Bay Area has fabulous hiking we enjoy year-round. The area of the Sierra Nevada Mountains pictured is about a 3-hour drive from here, perfect for a weekend adventure.

Donna Foerster - a picnic in the park, with a hike tossed in sounds like a perfect way to spend the holiday weekend. Enjoy!

George Souto  - this is prime ski country in winter, hiking country in summer; always awe inspiring.

I remember that particular weekend as being close to perfect, Debb Janes . Good times with good friends.

Joan Cox - you're right about that! Did you know that Gene and I met on top of Black Mountain, behind Cupertino, on a Sierra Club hike?

Hi Maria Gilda Racelis - I have a lot to smile about!

Good morning, Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905 - memories--one never knows when they will pop up! Yes, Donner Summit rises up over Donner Lake, winter grounds of the ill-fated Donner Party. And Wild was a captivating book. Some friends and I went to hear Cheryl Strayed, author, speak at the JCCC a couple of years ago--she's a firecracker! Fun to know about Johanna's husband.

Hello Joanna Cohlan - Your husband is doing some important work. Do the two of you get out and hike much, or is preservation and education more his bent?

That is quite the view, Lottie!  I've never gotten into trail hiking, other than rather short stints.  Your photo makes me understand why so many do!

You're right, Bob Crane - good memories, indeed. I have this photo on my bulletin board at my desk, and enjoy looking at it.

Good morning, Myrl Jeffcoat - when I'm out hiking, all the little, inconsequential worries disappear and I'm filled with happiness and gratitude. That's probably the #1 reason I enjoy hiking - plus, it's a great challenge!

I've hiked a bit in the Snowqualmie area of Washington, but don't know it that's on the Pacific Crest Trail or not. It was gorgeous, and I enjoyed hiking on the Kendall Cat Walk, Rene Fabre
