With longer periods of sunshine appearing between rain showers, it's time to get back to the Colorado lifestyle of seizing the great outdoors. And thanks to all that rain, the landscape is flourishing with wild flowers, everything is extrodinarily green, and the Colorado air smells cleaner than ever. It may have taken a little longer this year, but summer weather is finally here.
We are a popular area for cyclists, but even if you're not an advanced road or mountain biker, you can load up the bikes and head to Shooks Run Trail, near downtown. This trail is great for a breezy ride along the creek, and you can swing downtown for a bite after. Another great option is Monument Valley Park, also close to downtown, where the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail runs along the park and for many more miles in either direction, where it connects to several other trails along the way; it's also perfect for runners.
If hiking is more your thing, there's a multitude of trails to please all abilities in Cheyenne Canon. The scenic drive up Cheynne Boulevard into the canyon is worth the trip. It's especially stunning this summer with the huge overgrown trees bordering the street and its a great spot to get inspired by the well-kept houses in the area. Pack a lunch and remember to bring sunscreen and lots of water.
Of course our city parks and public pools are a good bet if you just want to get out for the sake of being outside. The city does a terrific job maintaining the facilities and landscape so wherever you go is sure to be pleasant. Bring a blanket and a good book to relax in the sun while the kids play.
For the more the adventurous, go white water rafting, camping, or fishing. Or do all three and take a long weekend to reset before the work week. There are several rafting companies in nearby Canon City or other parts of the state; be sure to check Groupon or Living Social for deals. As for camping, here's a list of top camp sites in the region.
However you define the Colorado lifestyle, we are fortunate to live in such a beautiful state, with its fantastic and varied outdoor pursuits.
