The Big Canoe community often holds festivities for residents and guests to celebrate the seasons and holidays. For instance, there is an Oktoberfest and a Thanksgiving dinner in the fall, New Year's Eve celebration and a romantic Valentine's Day dinner in the Winter. But one of the most exciting celebrations inside the gates of Big Canoe happens every year on the Fourth of July. And this year is no exception.
Saturday, July 4th
There are big plans for the Fourth of July weekend in Big Canoe for 2015. On Saturday, July 4th, the fun begins at 9:00 am with a dog parade. Immediately after that is the bike parade. Both parades encourage patriotic decorations which are limited only by the imaginations of parade participants. From 10:00 am to 1:00 pm there will be a plethora of activities on the Big Canoe soccer field. These include old fashioned games like tug of war, egg relays, and a water balloon toss.
Other activities will include face painting, a huge water slide, balloon animals and a dunk tank. A photo booth will be available at a cost, and food will be available for purchase. Along with hot dogs and hamburgers, fair food like cotton candy, popcorn and snow cones will also be available. All of the Wildcat Recreation area inside of Big Canoe will be turned into an environment similar to an old fashioned country fair.
Fireworks
And what Fourth of July celebration would be complete without fireworks? They will take place at 9:30 pm and are sure to please. The ball field is the central viewing area and people will be gathering with chairs and blankets at the ball field in the heart of Wolfscratch Village in the middle of Big Canoe to view the fireworks over Lake Petit.
Second Annual Big Canoe 5K Walk/Run
Then On Sunday, July 5th, there will be the second annual Big Canoe 5K Fun Run/Walk. Participants can run or walk and no official times will be kept, which takes the presure off of participants. Last year over two hundred and fifty people participated in the very first Big Canoe 5K Fun Run/Walk. The event will take place on the Wildcat trails which are paved and easy for every family member to navigate from youngest to oldest.
Right Out of a Norman Rockwell Painting
If you get the feeling that living in Big Canoe is a bit like living in an old fashioned small town featured in a Norman Rockwell painting, you are right. Big Canoe is not just a gated community, but a community of caring people who appreciate being able to live in an area of such beauty in the North Georgia mountains. And they also enjoy celebrating life together.
