When selling your home on the North Shore of Long Island, unless you are going to include your pets in the sale of your house...it's better to make them invisible during showings.
Here are a few instances where they were not...

The only amendment I would make to this blog post, is I would remove the North Side of Long Island, your points fully stand here in Phoenix.

Good afternoon Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff,
I listed a home about a month ago, nice one acre fenced with back enclosed building with electric and a huge cage. My sellers asked me; "Katina, we would prefer if you are present for all showings" The reason is that our German Sheppard knows you already and you can place him in the cage during the showings. Humm, of course, I can do that. Thank God, I had a contract the same day I listed the home. Nice dog, but he did not want to enter the cage.

Hello Larry, I agree with you 100%, no pets at showings. Some sellers may not understand but some people don't care for pets. Thanks for sharing with us!

It depends, doesn't it, on the type of pet? Many years ago we had Romeo and Juliet, two beautiful fan tail goldfish in an aquarium that kept us entertaind for many years. So, if pets have legs, yes, remove them temporarily although, I've seen pet snakes in glass cages too in homes for sale.

Larry & Sheila,
Hopefully my AR pic will be back up as I have sent a request in to AR to see why I'm no longer "here"
This pet thing IS such a challenge for all of us . . . especially when a Broker hires me for a consultation . . . I deliver the "bad news" to their clients for them since I will not be involved all the way up to closing like the agent is! NO PETS at showings is definitely the best way to go!

I would never leave my dog home alone when strangers were going to enter the house. First, it's not safe for the dog - careless people leave doors open. Second, it's the dog's job to guard his home - and he just might do so!
But... it's not just dogs. I once had a listing that included an Attack Cat. That was one mean creature! Even the man of the house was afraid of him.

Very true, you don't know how pets are going to react so better not to take a chance.

Agreed. If they cannot do anything else with the pets they do need to be well secured.

Oh boy do we all have stories like these! Amazingly some Seller's will refuse any sage advice on the subject.

I can tell that I have had issues in showing homes where the pets had the run of the house.
Good luck and success.

Animal lovers can't comprehend how fido may be an issue. On the flip side, I had buyers show up with their horse....oooops....sorry....dog and insisted on showing him around the property. I had to be the bad "guy" and explain that the seller's may have pet allergies and that the pooch would have to sit the showing out. I wanted to say ....REALLY?

I showed a house where not only was the Seller present, but he had a large Doberman chained up in the back yard. The Buyers looked nervously at the dog, the Seller said, "How do you like my dog? His name is Satan." The Buyers had no further interest in that house!

Great advice. Personally, I love pets; but many buyers don't.
True story!!

I am not going in a home with a pet in it unless it is in a cage with a closed door. I do not want the liability if one of my Clients gets attacked. If your cat runs outside, you can spend your time finding them. Don't leave them in the home...

Good morning Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Call 631-805-4400 (c),
I'm in total agreement with you on this one! Nothing against pets but when your home is on the market they need to magically disappear!

I have to say, although I have two doggies which I love dearly, if we were to put the house on the market, they would either be in doggie care or out of the house for all showings. Too many reasons to list here why that is the best choice. But then you name a good number of them, to which I concur.

The examples are excellent. What appears easy about prior arrangements to show homes with pets is not always the case.

Pets have "unreliable" personalities when it comes to showings...Our Dini...a/k/a Houdini Alpha Hanson would likely go home with the Buyers...he loves everyone...even if they don't love him back.
