Washougal River Seems To Be Lower Water Level This June 2015
With less snowpack and rain, the Washougal River water level seems lower than usual. There is less water "traffic" coming by on the river. We live here on the Washougal River. Kayaks, Inner Tubes and Salmon all enjoy our river area.
Kayaks:
It is usually a fun and welcome sight to see Kayak-ers coming barreling down past our back deck in the rapids in the spring and early summer. There is a "cove" near our house and sometimes the paddlers on kayaks will "hold up" there while others on kayaks would "try the rapids" near there. The water through the cove is slower so they can paddle back up the river a bit through the cove and try various tricks and tumbles with their kayaks. We have seen very few kayaks since June began. It's almost like "August" water level already.
Inner Tubes:
The weekends used to bring several sets a day of people passing by on their various floats and inner tubes. If we are outside, they will usually yell "Hello!" and wave at us. In the summer, we have a "smooth" spot in front of the house with not too many rocks and rapids. Often the floating friends would wait somewhere near our home for their slower floating friends. Very few people on inner tubes this year. We saw one family of eight people on tubes come by in the last couple weeks. Our grandkids said it's harder to float because of the rocks.
Salmon:
The "smooth" spot is actually a deeper water with no rapids. Salmon during one of the four salmon runs will "hold" up here and you can visually see the "schools" of fish swirling there. It is my personal opinion that I think the salmon take a rest there before attempting the rapids on up past our spot. With the water level being so low this June 2015, I think the fish are going to have a tougher time making it back up to the fish hatchery this fall.
