Do you drive buyers to you or to your company?

Many agents make the mistake of driving clients to the company.  That is great for the company but not good for the agent.  Sometimes this is masked as a benefit to the agent, but the truth is that it really benefits the company.  For example, does your company provide you with a "SOLD" bag after the property goes pending?  On the surface, seems like a neat benefit that saves the agent $50.  However, this "benefit' could actually cost you THOUSANDS by driving prospects to the company.

Signs used properly can greatly increase your business.  If used improperly and it will increase the business of your company.  Every marketing piece you do should drive clients to your phone number and your website.  That "SOLD" bag has the number of the company - not your phone number.  Potential sellers were impressed with the marketing and that the home sold quickly.  Now, with the potential seller calls the COMPANY and speaks with the duty agent.  The duty agent has now benefited from YOUR hard work.  The company can now tout the benefits of all the leads off the duty desk in order to recruit more agents.

Does the yard sign have the company number?  Great, it usually is BIGGER, and EASIER to read.  If you really study the fonts, the name rider will be in a slightly different font that is usually smaller and ever so slightly harder to read.  This is not by accident, this is by design.  The company is using you to drive business to the company.

Keep in mind, you are in business for yourself you want to drive business to YOU.  The company is in a support role.  Does it have to be agent vs company?  No.  Some companies readily encourage entrepreneurship and some companies understand that what benefits the agent ultimately benefits the company.  That is why you want to explore all your options.  Unfortunately, many agents do not look at their business as a business.  Some only see, "Wow, the company provides all my signage."  What initially seems like a benefit is actually hindering the growth of YOUR business.

Companies will not tell you this.  The big "hitters" know it and that is why they typically own their own signs.  They demand that the company number is not anywhere on the yard sign.  They spend thousands of dollars in order to make THEIR phone ring and if the company wants the phone to ring then the company can spend their own money.

I don't have the company number on anything I use. I keep the company logo as small as possible as well. I buy my own signs and riders and I've design my own advertising. Thank goodness I work with a Broker that understands this.

If our broker didnt like it I would find a new broker. EVERYTHING we do to brand my wife concentrates on her not the company!

It might sound ugly, but it is all about my family's wellfair. I love my company, but an owner/broker can sell at anytime changing everything. I try to keep myself as portable as possible

I've always been very careful to brand myself properly.  My cell phone is on everything and I never use the company phone number, just the name.

As a Broker/Owner I don't have a problem with an agent having only their name and number on the sign. After all, if you pay for the sign and the advertising you should benefit from it. As far as someone calling the Duty Agent and someone else getting the lead, you need to talk with your Broker and have the office policy changed about sign calls. The Agent whose name is on the sign should get the call, even if it is a rider on the sign.

I left a large regional company for this very reason. It is in my best interest to brand myself and make my phone ring! If my broker would ever sell the company I want my business to be as impacted as little as possible. I am my brand and I market myself.

Best,

No, I don't drive customers UNLESS they are RELO. Too many chances today of car accidents, and I don't need the extra liability. As far as real estate signs, our office policy is NOT to have the office number on it, the agent is responsibe for their name rider with number, and several use another rider with their web address on it. The reason we don't put the office number on, is it eliminates the incoming calls to our secretary, calls from a sign should go straight to the agent. Now I am with RE/MAX, and we have to buy our own signs, so that is not an issue. Agent's number only goes on the sign. But both offices I was associated with did not have the office main number on any sign. Works for me!

I agree with you that agents show monitor their actions so that they promote themselves first, company second.  I think your thinking applies also to an agent's internet activities and visibility as well.  Perhaps have their own web page and get the best name search ranking possible.  Even in the event you change companies, you will have branded you and not the company.   - John Raines Google Me

Do you ever set out to leave 10 comments and run out of steam and just want to get done and go to somebody you know and leave a worthless blog which includes like a big run on sentence that really doesn't make sense?
