ASK AN AMBASSADOR: Does It REALLY Matter Who Owns ActiveRain?

Big fish eats little fish, then a school of little fish eats the big fish??ASK AN AMBASSADOR:  Does It REALLY Matter Who Owns ActiveRain?

Jonathan Washburn

Market Leader

Trulia

Zillow

and now Ben Kinney.

What do they all have in common besides being at the helm of ActiveRain?

Not one of them has ever given me direction of what to blog.  Day after day, that choice has been mine.  As long as I follow the ActiveRain guidelines, I've been safe to choose what I want to write each day.  And as far as I know, those AR guidelines have been in place and not altered for years.

So if ActiveRain has changed, is it the fault of management or us as members?  Personally I look for management to supply these key needs:

  • Keep the platform up and stable (what good is an epic blog post that results in a 404???).
  • Keep the members adhering to the guidelines.
  • Do that SEO magic so our posts get found
  • Keep the fees reasonable
  • Don't favor one model over another

Outside of that, most of the rest is gravy to me.  Training?  Contests?  Featuring posts?  Just extra things that add to the experience but not the main reason I'm here daily.

If we don't like the blog topics being posted, well there's the option of skipping past post after post until we find something we want to read.  But accept that market reports, listings, community FAQs and local events are part of what gets our phone to ring and they're not going away.

And if we allow the pursuit of points to dilute our content, even cause us to publish posts of poor quality, well all we have to do is look in the mirror for the culprit.  And I'm not faulting posts written solely for fun, they definitely have their place and I enjoy them too.  But ultimately, to each their own.  At the end of the day, we're all adults and have blogging free will.  We choose or we don't choose:  what to write, how often to write and where we write.   Your blog, your call.

So does it matter who owns AR?  What do you think?

Liz and Bill Spear - I wonder if there is a difference between listing specialists and Buyer Agents in how they feel about this post.

As a listing specialist, I resent those outside of real estate professionals trying to profit from my efforts. I do not consider Z, T and the rest to be in our industry. They are in the business of DATA SALES.

I believe Buyer's Agents do not have a problem with the lead aggregators because they help them find Buyers.

John, Perhaps, not really sure.  We work with sellers and buyers both.  We use IDX hosted on our own site rather than Z or T to publish extensive information about various subdivisions.  That does mostly result in buyer leads vs. sellers, but that just makes sense.  For the most part, sellers SHOULD already know at least one (or ten) agents to pick from when they're ready to sell.  Buyers may not have the same choice since they're often coming from out of area to buy so they're more likely to Internet what they need.

Thanks for this post. Since I'm newer to the community I really have nothing to compare the site to. I am, however, excited to see what the future holds for us rainers.

BLiz: As long as our posts keep showing up in the SERPs, I really do not mind who owns AR. Buyers and sellers seek me out because they find my content...that has happened with every AR owner you mentioned above and I hope it will continue with BK and crew.

Hillary, I think the future is looking pretty good here.

Anita, I believe it will be in good hands with Ben.  And fortunately the SERPs have been good when we've done what we should on our side.

Good Morning guys, great post.  Does it matter "who"?  Personally I think a small company was nothing to the bigger guys who owned us before.  Going down to simplicity with 1 owner and a group of very talented creative staff is the way for us right now.  We need that staff to be excited about coming to work.

BLiz, what matters to me are personal things. Could be very foolish of me, rather like cutting your nose off to spite your face. I do not like either Z or T. I resent that they make money off me, then try to charge me money so that I will make money off myself. I can't do anything about it, I know that. But... was I happy they will be gone from AR? Yes indeed. To me it's like making the decision to shop local.

Chris, I had a conversation recently that eased any concerns I might have had.  We're heading in the right direction for this community.  We would have always been an afterthought for T or Z, with this change we have people that know and understand the community in charge, and that feels VERY right.

Andrea, I reconciled myself to ZTR being part of the landscape and other than R, haven't been paying for anything extra from the others.  But it does feel better to not be owned by a company we're competing against for home buyer and seller eyes on the web.

Au Contraire my friend. I can fully see the value of private ownership vs big high profile publicly held company like T and then Z. I was a little more concerned with T, however, having been a very long term VIP 3 and a major contributor on their Q/A platform that they would boch up and make a big mess out of AR like they did their own Blog and eventually even their Q/A platform.

Then when I heard Z had acquired them I really became concerned as I have about as much confidence in Z as I do bloody leg dangling in the midst of hungry sharks.

But then that's just my opinion and I'm still long on Z hoping they can do something right. However, so far their stock continues to decline while we enjoy the ride up with APPL and Disney. LOL!!

John, On a daily, grunt in the trenches level what I do doesn't change.  Write post, comment, rinse, lather, repeat regardless of who's at the top.  From a strategic level, who owns the site definitely does matter.  And breaking loose from T&Z will ultimately probably be a very good thing for this community.

Yes Liz and Bill Spear I agree about the lack of confirmation that Kerrie is coming back. I am most curious as to who they would attempt to replace her with. Not sure that is even possible.

Janis Borgueta , I did finally see/hear an answer.  There has been an offer made to her, it's up to her to take it after maternity leave if she so desires.

Yes, I would be totally surprised if they did not offer her a deal. Change is good sometimes when speaking about a career moving forward. It will be interesting to see where that goes. Sometimes a deal is just that sweet and the competition can't match it. Thanks for the updates Liz and Bill Spear

James, Not quite.  Jonathan Washburn was the founder and is not back.  Bob Stewart has been around since the early days and he's back.  Ben Kinney has also been around a long time also and is the new owner.
