Charles Carroll

Thanks for stopping by and taking time out of your day to read my post.  My intent is to put a smile on your face.  Hopefully you’ll go away with some information you may have forgotten about or did not know.  Now sit back and enjoy the post for the day.

Charles Carroll born September 19, 1737 in Annapolis, Maryland to a wealthy family.  We know back in those days if you were of the Catholic faith you were barred from holding any political office.  He was one of the richest land owners anywhere in the Colonies.  He had a very interesting life and was a strong voice for America’s independence.  His life is worth reading but not to bore you with all the details can you tell me what he is noted for other than being a wealthy landowner?  Well he was the last person who signed the Declaration of Independence to die.  Look for his signature on the document it’s there.  He was 95 when he died in 1832.

Remember to smile.  It will make people wonder what you have been up to.

You got me on this one. I was pretty sure I knew who Carroll was, being a Maryland resident, but I didn't realize that Catholics were barred from publc office. Maryland was established for Catholic religious freedom, so I was surprised that Catholics were barred when Anglicans got the upper hand!

I found this however in a Maryland history

Fearful that the Protestant masses might restrict Catholic liberties, the HOUSE OF DELEGATES passed the MARYLAND ACT OF TOLERATION in 1649. This act granted religious freedom to all Christians. Like Roger Williams in Rhode Island and William Penn in Pennsylvania, Maryland thus experimented with laws protecting religious liberty. Unfortunately, Protestants swept the Catholics out of the legislature within a decade, and religious strife ensued. Still, the Act of Toleration is an important part of the colonial legacy of religious freedom that will culminate in the First Amendment in the American Bill of Rights.

I did not know who Charles was. I did understand that most who signed the Declaration of Independence's were landlords.

Wasn't JFK the first Catholic President of the United States? I seem to recall that but maybe my brain is fuzzy.

I recall the Catholic ban originated in England. It's surprising it would be carried over to America, but believe it was. Thanks for the history today, James; I didn't know about Charles Carroll.
