The Mountains of Big Canoe, GA

Escaping the Heat in North Georgia

I recently heard on the radio that Georgia is on the thirteenth day of a heat wave where the temperatures have been in the nineties daily. Due to the humidity in Georgia, a day with temperatures in the nineties can make the air feel as though you are in a sauna. But, the good news for people living in or looking for a new home in North Georgia is that it is cooler in the mountains. The temperature in Big Canoe, Bent Tree and the neighboring town of Jasper, Georgia is always five to ten degrees cooler than "Hotlanta" as the city of Atlanta, Georgia is affectionately called during the dog days of summer. I know of many people who flock to North Georgia's mountains from Florida to escape the heat and humidity there.

This past week at noon one day the temperature measured ninety-five on our car's outside temperature gauge as we drove through Canton, Georgia. Canton is thirty-five minutes south of Big Canoe. Things cooled down the further north we drove. By the time we hit the town of Jasper, the temperature was down to ninety degrees. Jasper is considered the first "mountain town" in the North Georgia mountains as one heads north up Interstate 575 which turns into Interstate 515. And inside of Big Canoe on the ridge on which I live, it was eighty-eight degrees. There are many homes set on mountains and ridges in Big Canoe where even in the heat of the day, one can feel gentle breezes as they sit on a front porch or back deck in the shade. Still sound hot to you? Well, there are many ways to cool off in Big Canoe and still spend some time in the outdoors.

Lake Disharoon at Big Canoe, GA

Big Canoe offers two lakes to swim in, two outdoor pools, and one indoor pool. There are also many shaded mountain trails to hike on and enjoy nature in the cooler temperatures provided by the many trees and forests. Benches and fallen logs provide places to rest in the shade. Streams meander through the woods and they are perfect to wade in and cool off hot hiking feet for both man and beast!

The Black Bear Pub

The Black Bear Pub offers air conditioning in a restaurant with gorgeous mountain views. The food is delicious and the service is wonderful. With a menu full of sandwiches, salads and full meals at reasonable prices, a lunch in the Black Bear Pub in the heat of the day is a welcome and enjoyable way to spend some time in the heat of summer. The air cools down considerably at night and once the sun starts to set, the temperature drops enough to enjoy a glass of wine on the deck of the Black Bear Pub.

More Restaurants Outside the Gates

There are more choices of cool places to eat in the area. Just outside the north gate of Big Canoe, on Steve Tate Highway, are three new restaurant choices. They include the Italian restaurant Ed and Lucy's, The BBQ restaurant Reverend Billy's BBQ and The Forks, a deli offering eat in breakfast and lunch and to-go meals for picnics. Also in the same center is the Polar Bear Ice Cream Shop, with a delightful decor and delicious ice cream choices. All have air conditioning, provide a variety of meal choices and offer a perfect way to cool down in the mid-day heat.

If you are thinking of living in a region that brings you back to nature but allows you to escsape the heat of the deep south, a home in Big Canoe, Bent Tree or the North Georgia mountains may just be the perfect place for you.
